guts80
I'm not sure if the MR-3 is supposed to be like this but: With the MR-3 attached, I don't get a half-press; metering response, as I do when using the F3HP shutter release or the regular MD-4 shutter release. This is really only a minor problem. The real issue with my MR-3 (or possibly MD-4) is that when I'm on single frame advance, when I use my MR-3, it sometimes goes to continus for some odd reason. I tested the camera (without film) with switch on single advance and the MR-3 responed properly, advancing only frame with the button fully pressed. However at other times it keeps on firing until I release my finger. This is a serious annoyance as I usually end up wasting several unesccary frames. Can anyone shed some light on this issue? j_o3
The MR-3 is one of the great Nikon mysteries. To get meter function only, make sure both the F3 and the MD-4 are turned off. Then press the MR-3 and voila! the meter is activated without the shutter firing. With the MD-4 turned on, your camera's MR-3 function is normal and there is no half-press meter-only mode. The occasional continuous burst while in "S" mode is something my camera has done in the past, but I never got it fixed and it hasn't happened in a long time. BTW, it's unnecessary to use the MR-3 just to get a cable release to work with the MD-4. If you turn the motordrive AND the camera on, the regular threaded shutter release on the F3 operates the motordrive, too.
guts80
The reason why I got the MR-3 was so that I didn't have to arch my hand 90 degrees in an awkard angel to shoot in vertical format. The aforementioned things I basicly found out on my own. Thanks for confirming this is how it's supposed to work. =) As for the burst shots on 'S' mode...guess i'll just have a more controled trigger finger or shoot verticls how I used to, before I purchased the MR-3. psychophoto
While more pricey, you can also use the Mk-1 firing rate converter with the MD-4 for better vertical framing ergonomics. Adds a second shutter release in what I feel is a more comfortable position.
guts80
I was contemplating it...but I figured the money for the MK-1 could be better spent on more film / a new lens (been eyeing the Nikkor AF 80-200mm/F2.8D for quite some time now).
