marck mcgill
Do you remember those exposure guides with all those nice symbols that came with the films not very long ago? The sun, the sun covered by clouds, the rain... Well, over the years, I've tried to cut and paste some of those symbols to make a home-made exposure guide that could cover almost every situation. Not that I'm very satisfied with that collage - esthetically speaking - so: has anyone ever seen a pre-made and printable exposure guide on the internet, with a lot of symbols and including many different cases? PS: please refrain from suggesting the purchase of an exposimeter ;-)
harry_zet
find the back of an old (pre-f-series) rolleiflex TLR: they have very nice exposureguides there. the older ones are written, the newer ones are drawings. i rely heavily on these and they perform okay with color-neg. film. but why not buy an exposuremeter:-)
gene m
Film speed is film speed. If you know the required exposure(s) for ONE film speed, you know the required exposure(s) for ALL speeds. If you really want a chart, I suggest you do one in Excel. The program could even do the math for you. If you really want the symbols you could even import them into your spreadsheet. Photography can be a sickness. We all show different and strange symptoms. Yours is not unique. One of my symptoms is lugging around a heavy and expensive 4x5 outfit AND a $5 Anscoflex on my photo excursions.
harry_zet
gene is right - it does not hurt if you are mad. i will start to a five-days london-trip tomorrow: together with a speed graphic 4x5 and 50 sheets of film + a rolleiflex 2,8e.
eric merrill
Here's a starter: <p> <a href="http://www.fredparker.com/ultexp1.htm#Light%20Intensity%20Chart">http://www.fredparker.com/ultexp1.htm#Light%20Intensity%20Chart</a> <p> There are enough situations that would make for confusing icons if you just tried to stick to icons, imho. <p> --<br> Eric<br> <a href="http://canid.com/">http://canid.com</a>
connealy
Rick Oleson has a very handy little sliderule-type exposure calculator which you can download and print out. After that, all you need is a piece of tape to assemble it, and maybe a ten-year-old who is handy with sissors. I printed mine so that its final assembled dimensions are 2.5 inches by 4 inches -- big enough to read, but still small enough to fit comfortably in a shirt pocket.<br><br><a href="http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-43.html">http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-43.html</a>
marck mcgill
@ HARRY: thanks for the idea, I didn't know that, since I still don't own a Rollei :-( I'll try to see one, to check how complete that table is. No scans of a Rollei's back on the internet? @ GENE: Yes, I know. I was actually doing a 100ASA-based table, to be adapted on the fly in case I was using some different speed. @ ERIC: Thanks for the link. Too bad it's not made with fancy icons, since it has some useful cases of which I don't have a drawing. @ MIKE: thanks but I've never been able to see Rick Oleson's website, even though many pointed me at it before. Time for him to buy a registered domain name with some hosting, methinks... I hope I'll have time to scan that freak "collage" table I made back in those days... It was before the internet, the scanners, the easy ediding... I remember that I've xeroxed the "skiing/sailing" symbol directly by the body of a Bolex-Paillard 8mm movie camera! connealy
Sorry to hear you cannot get to Rick's site. It is a terrific resource for people who are interested in getting their old cameras in shootable condition. What happens when you click on the link I provided? Since I'm on a slow modem connection in rural New Mexico, I always assume virtually everyone else is getting better results than I am.
marck mcgill
Nothing special: the good'ol white screen saying that the page doesn't exist on the internet. It's always been like that, unfortunately.
connealy
Tripod is not one of my favorite server sites; there is certainly some nastiness there. However, it looks to me like Rick has paid something extra to have his content displayed without the annoying pop-ups. Might be interesting to see what kind of results you would get from a different browser or from resetting your current browser to the defaults. marck mcgill
It's actually the first website that I permanently couldn't see since I got on the internet. I remember that the topic was discussed <a href="http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=007VrW">here</a> for the first time. In the end, some good soul sent me the schematics I needed via Email!
alex_lofquist
It sounds like a good idea for "symbol-minded" photographers.
marck mcgill
Well, then here come the symbols I collected back then by cutting the film boxes. No extra symbols downloadable from the net?<br><br><br><img src="http://www31.brinkster.com/lamarine/varied/photosymbol.jpg"><br><br>
