richard_arthur
This seems to be a widely used monopod head. I've never seen one, but I understand that it only allows movement around one axis, correct? It supposedly allows you to flip the camera over for vertical shots. But for greatest stability, I also understand that a monopod should not be used in a completely upright position, but should be angled slightly away from upright and braced against your body. But if the monopod is angled away from upright then it seems like you need a way to tilt the head back and forth to compensate for the angle of the monopod, i.e., to keep the bottom plane of the camera parallel with the plane of the ground. But if the only movement the 3232 and 3229 heads allow is to tilt the camera left and right into position for verticals then there would be no way to do this. Am I just confused or do these heads really only allow movement around one axis?
mark_scheuern
Right, the 3232 (I'm not sure about the 3229) just tilts on one axis. Since I normally use the monopod with long lenses that have a tripod collar that allows for rotation I use that to flip for verticals and still have the head's tilt function for that axis. You're right that, if you attach the monopod to the camera, you have a choice of flopping it on its side or tilting but not both since there's only one free axis. eric merrill
I have the 3229 head on the 681 monopod.
You are correct. It allows movement along one axis. If you want to angle your 'pod leg slightly out in front (to form a tripod in conjunction with your legs), then adjust the angle of the quick release plate on the camera. Works easier in practice than it is to explain.
If you want ultimate flexibility, get a ballhead. But those can be a pain to operate on a monopod, as well. Ideally, there would be a head the size of the 3229/3232 that gave one axis movement, along with allowing slight tilts in a perpendicular direction. Oh, well. :)
--
Eric
http://canid.com/
