patrick_jelliffe
I looked over a friends M2 today, and there is a "92" in the wax sealwhere the "L" was originally. Does anyone know if this is/was acommon practice? Is it a trademark of a particular repair facility? Thanks for your comments.
patrick_jelliffe
Geez, I just looked in the archives and someone mentioned that the '92' is DAG's trademark...Does he change the number annually?
diego_k.
It´s Don golberg´s (DAG) number, my M3 was CLA´d (this summer) by him and have the same 92 instead of the L before it.
jim_a
Don's dad was the first authorized repair person outside of Leica in the U.S. This was the the wax sealer given to him by Leica. It was given to Don by his dad when he retired. That's how I remember the story when I asked Don a few months ago. I didn't ask what significance the '92' was, whether it was chosen by Leica or his dad. So a little mystery remains... Isn't it better that way? ;)
Bill Blackwell Images
Leica assigned all authorized service technicians a number for the wax seal. My friend, Rudy Ling (a retired Leica service technician), told me the practice was discontinued at Leica's request. Alas, some still continue the practice... “When you come to a fork in the road, take it ...” – Yogi Berra
jay_.
Kinderman's CLA's come back with a "J" embossed in the wax, ostensibly for Jerry Smith (?). Sherry takes a pin and scratches a "K" in the wax. Classy.
patrick_jelliffe
I guess I haven't looked closely enough at other M bodies to notice these various hallmarks before. Pretty cool. Do you think digicams will bear the repair person's hallmark when they are repaired?
