Hexar Silent Mode patent

In reading about the Konica Hexar, I understand that the silent mode

had to be discontinued due to an apparent patent infringement.

However, I'm curious to know who holds this patent and why they

aren't using it. Anyone know?

I could not find any info on the net on the details of the infringement. Without knowing the patent number or details of the Hexar design, it becomes difficult to point to the patent that was infringed. Doing a quick search yielded the following patents. Just enter the patent numbers at the www.uspto.gov site - the patents can be viewed for free.

4213689 , July 22, 1980 , Electromagnetically actuated shutter mechanism for cameras, Clapp

4361387 , November 30, 1982 , Camera mechanism, Cloutier

4629302 , December 16, 1986 , Camera with focal plane shutter apparatus, Willcox

4760415 , July 26, 1988 , Film advance device for surveillance cameras, Alexander

4881092 , November 14, 1989 , Motor driven camera, Fukahori

4972217 , November 20, 1990 , Shutter mechanism drive having reduced mechanical noise, Gaewsky

To answer your question, it's not uncommon for a patent holder to ultimately not make and use the invention claimed in their patent. Look for the limited edition Hexar AF with silent mode in platinum finish when the patent expires. :)
