stephaniejo
The International World Press Photos of the Year were annouced last week, recognizing top press photographers in 11 categories for 2007. First through third places were awarded in both the singles and photo stories divisions, with additional honorable mentions in some categories.

Some of my favorites:

First Prize Sports Features Stories: Erik Refner, Denmark. Copenhagen Marathon finish line.

I think that capturing sport is most insightful when capturing expression. Refner uses similar framing in each to close in on each face getting a range of expressions, while the water element helps to tie the story together.

First Prize Spot News Singles: John Moore, USA. Assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

I think the absence of a single, clear focus in the image captures choatic nature of the event, and gives the viewer a more emotional response than a clear, informative image might have.

Third Prize Nature Stories: Paul Nicklen, Canada. Life at the edge, Arctic Ocean.

More than anything with this series, I enjoyed the composition changes from wide shots to detail. The subject matter evokes a changing perception of the inhibitants in the Arctic.

More: World Press Photo Winners' Gallery
