richardvanle
A local radio station here in NYC is doing a project on street photography. There are galleries, videos, and audio pieces. The actual radio piece is airing Friday, May 23 at 10, 93.9 FM and 820 AM on The Brian Lehrer Show. Only part of the website is up, but it looks like it will be interesting: http://www.wnyc.org/streetshots/
There is a video of Bruce Gilden working, which is always fascinating to watch. kurt_evers
In the video on the site, Bruce Gilden says ""I have no ethics" -- I agree. If any stranger tried to photograph me that way (flash in the face), I'd punch them.

._._z
Gilden would punch you back, then have you arrested for battery. And if he sued you, he'd win.
Damon DAmato
I think his technique is harsh, and he succeeds only at making his subjects look frightened, angry, ugly, or foolish. > Gilden would punch you back, then have you arrested for battery. Good point. Kurt, better make sure you clock him. > And if he sued you, he'd win. That would be up to the jury. Damon
._._z
That's up to the definition of battery, Damon. Public photography is illegal, responding with a punch is not. Simple as that.
richardvanle
I'm surprised people don't get angry or confront him. But then again, in the clip Gilden is photographing on 57th St and Times Square ラ lots of tourists and out-of-towners. So maybe the subjects just consider his behavior as part of a "New York" experience.
mike dixon
Public photography is illegal, responding with a punch is not.
I think you meant to say, "Public photography is legal, responding with a punch is not."
._._z
That would make a little more sense, yes!
