phule
Flight details are welcome! :)

Flight from ORD to JAX. Not sure where this is. I saw the river off in the distance as we approached, with the sun glinting off the water. As "luck" would have it, the window started to frost up, but I still managed to get a shot. Droid X

cjk
The vista was breath-taking, the light was perfect, the weather was clear ...

... the window-side business class seat was roomy and comfy, even the glass on the window was scratch-free and clean, and the flight crew was "lenient" on the use of electronics so shortly after take-off...

... But my "real" camera was in my carry-on, 3 meters away from my hand. All I had was my iPhone. Even my P&S was in my carry-on.

My frustration was beyond belief. What made it worse was that 4 days ago, I was next to those same cliffs at dawn trying to take a few shots to convey their majesty, with pretty poor results.
To get a sense of the scale, you can see the highway winding between the cliffs (horizontally, about center of the photo).
Could have, would have, should have... Oh well...

Flight from RUH to JED this morning...

AlanKlein
Cesar: Nice shot. How high are the escarpment cliffs?
Flickr gallery: https://www.flickr.com/photos/alanklein2000/albums
cjk
Alan: thanks.

Re height, hard to tell as there is no vegetation to give a sense of scale but I would say 100m-150m (300ft - 450ft). Going west from the city, there are 3 "rows", a few km apart. Riyadh is at about 700m altitude, so my guess is that beyond the 3 successive rows of cliffs, the desert is at about 300m altitude.

I actually went back this afternoon to the 1st set of cliffs. Attached is a quick & dirty pano. Compared to the highway bisecting the aerial photo, this one is taken directly north of the highway, on the right side of the cliff.

AlanKlein
Was that area sedimentary seas before and the escarpments are what's left?
Flickr gallery: https://www.flickr.com/photos/alanklein2000/albums
cjk
@Alan: indeed!
One can still find fossilized shark teeth and starfish...

How did you guess?
AlanKlein
The rocks look sedimentary and also reminds me of Monument Valley and other similar areas in our Amercan west. I believe there was a great inland sea at one time there as well.
Flickr gallery: https://www.flickr.com/photos/alanklein2000/albums
