  1. Last Fri nite with Tri-X in Diafine. Sounds like an alibi to me. ( -: }

  2. Another one with 75 wide open @ 1/60th. BTW: no local tweaking of levels, dodging, burning, etc.on these scans, in PS. I did create highlight masks in PS to calm down the areas of specular brightness. The lighting was atrocious and an all-metal guitar can throw an awful lot of glare.

  4. Nice shots given the difficult lighting.

  5. Here is one with a 35/1.4 asph on M4 -

  6. Here is another, from last Friday night (Saturday morning), with a rental 85mm L lens on a Canon -

  9. James K -- fine phtos. The night is yours.

  10. James K - Did you forget to apply USM to your pics?

  11. USM looks like a perfectly decent place, but I didn't apply there either, back at the turn of the (last) century when I was young.
    00GMMU-29887484.jpg

  12. James K - I can tell the difference between a three stop under-exposed hiccup and a five stop under-exposed hiccup. But when you throw in a four stop under-exposed hiccup in the mix, it screws things up for me.

  13. Hey, that last one 12:02 is not too bad, JK. Keep it up.

  14. JK - Did you by chance apply the sharpening plug-in in reverse?

  18. Superb (and slightly scary) sequence James. Thanks

  30. Some really fantastic photographs here. I mean superb stuff. Am quite fascinated with James Kim's work. The imagry is quite starling, and brilliant. But there are other imagages here that are quite brilliant too. Wish I could join in. Do have night life photos. But busy finishing a book. Or I should say busy letting a book finish me.

  31. I agree. Nels - what gives? We all have our own style. Live and let live.

    Nice one Michael!

  34. WTF? The demented guy started going after me since practically the day I joined, to the point where he even goes to No Words forum where I post pics and make stupid comments.

Never do I take anything said by him (and a few others here) seriously, but when I exercise my right to yank his chain, the least I expect some of you to do is keep it shut unless you're willing to point out his inane remarks to him here and call him on it. Capeesh?

  35. Mr Kim: You the man!

This guy is taking chances, technically and artistically. To me it's obvious he's working
from a whole-body or gut level. More how it feels than how it looks. If one harvests more
failures with this working method, the rare successes are that much more interesting. And
the failures point the way to self-correction.

  36. ok. Nels. I'm staying out of it. I do remember some jostling back and forth but I don't really want to know anymore who started this or whatever. I'm sure you guys can sort it out.

  37. Seems like you understand, Rene. It was started on S/D forum that I started visiting soon after I joined. First attackers were Ray, Kei, and James K. When I started giving some of them doses of their own medicine, things got ugly, and some of the threads got deleted (hence, can't reference them). Fact is, I take none of these people seriously. But this joker keeps at it. To his credit, I'll say that the guy shoots (and not just with his camera).

"If one harvests more failures with this working method, the rare successes are that much more interesting."

Does the expression "even a dead clock is right twice a day" have any bearing here? I wonder.

  39. Nels has a point regarding that particular remark. No question Nels is a fine, disciplined artist capable of producing excellent images, as we see here.

I also think Ed's great, but I really missed the old Ed. He just talks differently now, good or bad i don't know, ymmv.

why not let your pix speak for you instead of the constant put downs? One certainly don't have to say another's bad in order to say yourself is great..that's what i think anyway..

Careful Travis, this isn't your fight, besides they both seem confident and capable given their respective styles. And I sincerely I doubt either of them are losing any sleep of this stuff. So I say if they want to have a bit of a pissing contest, go for it, at least it shows some passion.
Nothing worse than a bunch of self-congratulatory back-slappers.

  149. Other than his inability to get over his own persistently hounding inferiority complex, and seek attention, I don't see a single reason why anyone who is genuinely talented would want to continue to go after a specific person and mock them on countless occassions - including on a strictly "No Words" forum.

Peter, your hero can barely compose two sentences without using a cuss word or a personal insult. If he is so comfortable in his own skin, why does he use such cheap tactics to draw attention to himself? To entertain the likes of you? Are you suggesting that your tastes in entertainment are so poor? Or do you vicariously share the same psychotic symptoms as your hero and simply come here to get a cheap fill-up because you can't find enough fulfillment on your own?

Con artists usually scream the loudest - especially at others - to get noticed. That is their nature.

  150. Jim's mannerism nowadays reminds me very much of Grant's. Personally, I remembered Ed as soft spoken(and yet churned out great stuff constantly). Ed then to me was one who spoke with his pictures. I duuno if this is just an internet personality or..

I mean Ed can go on, being like that, it's ok, some really don't care as long as he produces the goods because he is backed by his talent, which sometimes make his words go wild and if i may say, a little abrasive (for no particular reason, other then to tell people, "i have talent, so screw u"). Is this an inevitable transformation? Has anynomity encouraged this?

Ed, your choice. But when I really like the former you...a photog who let his pix spoke for him. I will always remember "that" you.

  151. Peter - If you're making this an issue about pictures, you're missing the point.

  152. Travis,

I know nothing about the history of this forum and its personalities. Frankly, I don't care to.

All I know is, there are a few individuals here that I have absolutely no interest in meeting in real life, even by chance.

  153. thanks Peter....was copying my old archived CDs over to a 200 GB external USB hard drive and had forgotten I even took some of these pics. Some hadn't even gone past just scanning them into a folder. Amazing what you find when you re-archive.....heh.

  155. nice Mike...apparently 2003 was a pretty "rich" photographic year.....heh.

  156. perhaps there are other people who long ago left behind a simple devotion to so called proper exposure and basic ideas regarding shaprness. There is nothing wrong with a pure descriptive image ala scientific method - but to many people, this is not particularly interesting anymore.
Qualities that any modern autofocus camera can achieve with little help from the photographer seem like rather poor qualities with which to distinguish interesting work from uninteresting work. Sharpness (or lack of sharpness) in itself isn't meaningful. If it were, Robert Frank's work wouldn't be in museums and galleries, but photos of resolution charts would.

  157. nice Mike...apparently 2003 was a pretty "rich" photographic year.....heh.
Thanks. I seems to spend a lot more time in bars and such when I'm not in a serious relationship. Fortunately for my night-time photography, my girlfriend is heading to England for several months this week.

  158. haven't seen a thread like this in a long time... thanks folks!

  159. Just because in some types of pictures sharpness isn't important (and rightly so), it doesn't imply that every single blur that someone manages to photograph - whether by choice or accident, and often under poorly exposed/lit conditions - is an automatic and bona fide work of art.

  160. Nice Travis! Now you're talking...

  161. Just because in some types of pictures sharpness isn't important (and rightly so), it doesn't imply that every single blur that someone manages to photograph - whether by choice or accident, and often under poorly exposed/lit conditions - is an automatic and bona fide work of art.
I agree. Where did anyone claim that?

  162. The results that JK produces are beyond chance. His results are 'blurs' between reality and fantasy that you don't see in normal life and that could perhaps be created with some heavy/pretensious photoshop work. Yet his shots a lot of times convey motion and that makes them dynamic. At other times they create painting like images that I would expect from Van Gogh. I guess that it's clear that I like his photographs. And don't be fooled if you think that they are mistakes. There is some creative photoshop work behind them as well.

But, Nels, I think that you get it and that you were basically jerking his chain because he jerked yours.

  184. Jeez, Iメve just woken up from a state of comatose (too many cups of tea) and find myself back where I started two days ago I think.

I sort of remember a hellva glow, and a large face with a frown upon it sporting a huge bushy beard and a large monocle on It's left eyeナsort of like my Leica 90mm chrome summicron. Scary or what! I thought I must be looking on the face of the old bloke upstairs...how about that to give you a turn. Anyway, my mate Trev cried out to me and then I was gone. Well, to carry on, after leaving my body and visiting the far reaches of the cosmos, I was given a special tablet explaining the greater mysteries of life and it's greater purpose.....unfortunately my cat Satan thought it was a sweet and ate it....sorry about that folks I did check his sht but it had dissolved.

Nels, everyone who has posted on this tread have been told their photos are a load of crap at some time; I've been around a bit longer than you.

    So what! Like it matters.

  185. "a large face with a frown upon it sporting a huge bushy beard and a large monocle on It's left eye?"

That was not the man upstairs. It was Roger Hicks....

  187. "I did check his sht but it had dissolved."

You need to consult some experts here who know how to resurrect something by applying USM to dissolved sht, Allen.

Cheers, and welcome back to the real world as advertised by PNet.

  188. Nels, whether someone else started it or not doesn't make you look any less peurile for
    continuing it.

Please feel free to reply to this with an ad hominem.
