I do whatever processing I can on the larger image (cropping, brightness, contrast etc) then I reduce the image to a size that seems ok. I had thought about doing that but thought I'd loose a lot of quality. At 28% reduction, I didn't lose nearly as much as I expected. Thanks for sending me in the right direction.
