mark_sirota1
It probably has a bigger shutter, and certainly has a bigger mirror.

bms
They are both fairly loud (I have both). I have not compared them, but since I shot with a Leica M4 and a Mamiya 7, I wear ear plugs when I shoot with either Nikon :)
epp_b
I don't know what you define as "fairly loud", but I find the D300 shutter and mirror slap to be quite a bit quieter and gentler than the D40's. I'd expect the D700's to be louder than the D300's because the larger image pane requires a larger shutter and mirror.
paul_b.1
First of all, the D700 have a newly-configured mirror box designed to lessen mirror black-out times. There's also a new mirror balance mechanism that greatly reduces mirror bounce , replaceing the conventional one henge mechanism . I find the D700 mirror sound to be odd, but not loud. In fact I don't like the sound at all. The complex mirror movement sound like something is gonna break ...If you think the D700 makes a lot of noise you should listen to the D3 shutter sound.
liljuddakalilknyttphotogra
I shoot both in 14-bit & I would say that the D700 has a softer shutter sound than the D300 - - but maybe that's just my cameras....
Lil :-)
photo5
I noticed the D700 had a slightly louder and sharper shutter sound than the D300, and at first it was a little annoying. Then I got used to it and now it reminds me of the sound my F3HP shutter made.
Matthew Brennan
I had the opposite experience to Lil. I shot with the D300 for approx. 2,500 actuations, it was the quietest mirror slap of any Nikon D-SLR I've used.

My D700 - out of the box, was by far the loudest mirror slap of any Nikon D-SLR I've used until approx. 6,000 actuations, it has since become much more silent in operation, and subjectively speaking, nearly as quiet as the D300.
dan_south
I like the mirror and shutter on my old N80 - whisper quiet with very little "mirror slap" vibration. Why can't they put 1990's technology into a new DSLR?

:)
leighmcmullen
D700 is clearly at least twice as loud. A much more assertive, crisp sound to boot. I presume it's because the actual shutter is more than twice as large.
(Nikon APS-C = 370mm\2, Nikon Full Frame = 864mm\2)
