Shooting tethered wirelessly

I recently learned that the Eye-Fi devices are just one-way file transfer devices. They do not provide true tethered shooting (i.e., camera control from the connected computer.)

Other than the much-too-expensive Canon WFT solutions and the DIY Wireless USB solution, does anyone know of a wireless tethering solution for my Canon 50D.

I especially need LiveView because my intention is to boom the camera out over the subject, and need to control focus and exposure from the computer.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Use a small, lightweight, inexpensive netbook, physically tethered to the camera, and then set up an ad hoc WiFi connection between it and another computer, using the Remote Desktop Protocol. Essentially, remote control that small computer, using a virtual desktop at a WiFi distances. You can do this with a cheap, used netbook lashed to your boom or placed at the base of the stand using a longish USB cable, and your existing WiFi-enabled laptop or desktop machine for control. Or, use something like an iPad for your RDP terminal (you can do this with any of several free or cheap apps).

Wasn't sure what sort of distances or logistics were involved, Charles. Didn't meant to make it sound complicated - I RDP machines all the time, it's a natural solution for me! I've used it to remote control Nikon bodies before, over long distances. But I'm a nerd.

I'm looking for a direct camera-to-laptop wireless connection that replaces my 20ft USB cable.

I can't do remote desktop on any of my machines, they're running either Win7 Home Premium or Vista Home Premium, neither of which supports RDP.

I guess I'm looking for a robust, non DIY wireless USB solution.

Have a look at http://www.ezairwireless.com/ezdock.html#tech . I did not try it myself but I did research this some time ago to solve a quite similar problem. I finally chose to go a different way. I don't know if this solution would work, so I would suggest you contact the manufacturer and ask some questions.

There is also a wireless USB blog: http://www.wireless-usb.eu/wusb/ , and a wikipedia entry on WUSB standard: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_USB
I hope this help.
Good luck with your project.
