jbevans
I am making a series of photos with a single theme and will probably display it in the local library. My question is how many photos should I be thinking of? I will need at least 12 to do a calendar. I am thinking note cards as well. Each of these gallery, calendar, notes requires a different number of photos but I am most concerned about the gallery setting. Don't want to have so many the viewer gets bored. Any thoughts or experience?
seismiccwave
A series can be anywhere from 2 to infinity number of photographs. If you are going to display the photographs in the local library don't you think that the real estate constrain is more your concern? In another words how many photographs can you physically display in the local library should restrict the number of photographs you may consider. mark_chartrand
John, Mr. Tsang is correct. Also, make sure you give lots of room between photos to give the display room to breathe and for the viewer to be able to think between images. Have a "running" theme so that each image flows to the next and to the next and so on. Think of your display as a novel a beginning - middle - end. Good Luck. Spearhead
How much space do you have? What are you trying to communicate? Who is the audience? Music and Portraits Blog: Life in Portugal
jbevans
My display is variations of similar subjects, all photos will be of seedheads. There is room for up to 20-22 photos but think that is too many for the subject. I am trying to communicate the beauty of the plants in a mature state. I am thinking now about 12 -15 photos will maintain interest and still meet the objectives. The audience is mixed. The one thing they have in common is they all go to the library. machts gut
Are you familiar with the work of Karl Blossfeld http://www.karl-blossfeldt-archiv.de/ He made hundreds of photos of plants and seed heads and I never get bored watching them. If I get bored from an exhibition I simply turn away, if not I keep on watching. I would show as many photos as you like. Redundancy is in the eye of the viewer. william l. palminteri
My friends and I use the term "Gallery fatigue". That occurs when, at a gallery, we've seen so many exhibits that the next one looks just like the last one, "Wait a minute, didn't we see that one ten minutes ago?" "I dunno, all I see is the exit!" A they say in showbusiness "Always leave 'em laughing and wanting more!" Bill P.
charles_stobbs3
Some one, I think a nun that does art criticism on British TV, says that when you go to a museum you should go to only one gallery and then look at only three or four pictures. More than that you can't really appreciate.
