Salon photography , Art photography - subset or disjoint set

Recommended Posts

It is an approach that fosters craftsmanship and classic rules to things like composition and

color and often subject. It is closer to "fine art" photography than to photography as an Art

because rules in the later can change.

'Salon' photography was big in the early and mid parts of the 1900's - they were very big with the Pictorialist movement photographers (Mortensen, etc.). Basicaly, people would submit their prints for judging and display to salons all over the world and or more people would judge the entries and choose what would be displayed. Accepted prints would often collect stickers on the back of the mount, and these stickers became very desireable to have. The PSA (Photogrpahic Society of America) held many 'Salons' in that time, and continue to do so today, but there is now little or no use of the term 'salon'. I don't remember when it's use fell from favor, but it was some time ago and the PSA is the only organization that still uses that term that I am aware of. A good book to read if you are interested in this is "After the Photo-Secession: American Pictorial Photography, 1910-1955" (ISBN: 0393041115)
