al larson
Hi- I was admiring some portraits of Monica Bellucci by a photographer named Ruven Afanador. What struck me was the natural light he was using. It appears very similar to the light Irving Penn used in his studio portraits. Can anyone comment on how this lighting is set up? Here is a link to some work by Ruven Afanador... http://www.throckmorton-nyc.com/Torero_index.htm
ellis_vener_photography
I'd be very surprised if he does not use very large softboxes and flash equipment to imitate diffuse daylight in a controllable manner.
ellis_vener_photography
In the studio, at least from the 1960s on, Penn has used electronic flash. You might be thinking of the "World's in a Small Room" project" where he had a specially built ttent like studio made that he could take on location. At least one wall was removabla and he used a very large bounce panel to bounce indirect daylight back into the studio.
