jnanian
hi: can anyone give me the name of a pro lab in the carolinas that does archival black and white printing and processing, and uses no hardener in their fixer? i came across a lab's website months ago. the lab seemed to be a very well known, and they were one of the few labs i came across that doesn't use hardener in their fixer ... the only thing i remember about their website is that there is a spotted dog on it 8D .. i have been doing google searches for a while now, searching all my bookmarks for the last few years, &c &c ... and can't find their name ... anyone know the lab i am refering to ? thanks in advance for your help! john
Troll
John, if you're going to have someone else do your darkroom work, why does it matter whether they use hardner? (This is not intended as a smart-alek question, but a serious inquiry to your purpose.)
jnanian
hi bill - no need to worry - i didn't take your question the wrong way ;) i do habs work and if the job is big enough, i can't process & print my own ... as to why i am looking for this particular lab that doesn't use hardener ... the government won't accept prints or negatives if they were fixed with hardener in the fixer. the hardener tends to "trap-stuff" in the film and paper that won't want to wash out, so using hardener decreases archival stability. also, this lab has a reputation for doing very beautiful toned prints and negatives, and from what i have read, you can't use hardener when there is toning involved too ... i personally never have used hardener (going on 20 some odd years) and i have never had problems of scratched negatives or prints. i am kind of confused as to why they even make the stuff ... seems like just one more chemical to have in the darkroom .. oh, i was emailed the name of the lab - (THANKS PETE!) dalmation black and white photo lab have a nice day -john
