john_robison3
Just found a really clean XA for $5 but although the battery check light lit, when you press the shutter it stays open for 4~5 seconds no manner what aperture is set or where you point it.
Ideas?
Not worth Fixing?
Bad electronics?
lwg
Have you tried a new battery?
john_robison3
Unlikely. The battery check shows good and this probably is an electromagnetically controlled shutter. Weak voltage should result in a total failure to open at all.
peter_simpson1
Back when these were being sold, my sister in law gave me hers, which had stopped functioning. I looked into having it repaired and was told that the shutter control IC was a known weak point, and no spares were available.
lex_jenkins
If I'm recalling correctly, John Hermanson still offers repairs for the XA only - not the later XA2, 3 or 4.
patrick j dempsey
^ That will cost you a little more than $5, which BTW is an INCREDIBLE price on this camera. You should really try a fresh battery before paying for repairs or considering selling it though.
john_hermanson2
It probably has a bad circuit board which makes camera "beyond repair". John
john_robison3
Thanks to all for input.
John H., kinda thought that was likely. No great monetary loss though. Probably why it was left at a Goodwill. The thrift/second hand stores around here are CRAZY! They want $7.99 for a Vivitar PN2011 but I picked up a OM-2Sp w/50mm f1.8 for 14.99 that was 'locked up', new batteries and it came to life and was fully functional.
bebu_lamar
It doesn't see the light. The photocell could be dead or got covered by something. Just curious the meter still move up and down as you point to bright/dark and changing the aperture? However, the photocells for meter indication and exposure are 2 different ones. It's kinda Olympus way of doing thing. Just like their OM-2, the photocell for meter and one for autoexposure are 2 different ones and not even related to each other.
