Nikon Wednesday Pic 2010: #52

  1. Important: please keep your image under 700 pixels wide for in-line viewing, and please keep the FILE SIZE UNDER 300kb. Note that this includes photos hosted off-site (at Flickr, Photobucket, your own site, etc).

Are you new to this thread? The general guidelines for these Wednesday threads are right here. Remember: only one image each week!
Hi, Nikon folk. Last Wednesday of 2010! Have I really started 52 Wednesdays since my first? Impossible! Another grateful nod to Jose Angle, who started this fine tradition, and kept it up for so long.

I normally try to post an image from the current week, but I'll take the occasion of looking back on the year to go back farther, and share one taken with an older Nikon film body. I wasn't yet digital in 2003 when I photographed an unknown (to me) tall drink of water and his Weimaraner about to head into the field at a hunt test. It was an early, foggy morning, and the handsome team's bearing caught my eye.

Seven years later, I got an out of the blue e-mail from the fellow's girlfriend, asking to buy a print. His treasured canine companion had just died of old age, and she was shopping for a photo of his favorite breed to give him as a gift. And with the entire internet to search, she stumbled across this shot, of him, with that same beloved champion dog in his prime. I re-scanned the neg, printed on fine art paper, and delivered a framed version she could present to him as a Christmas surprise. Let this be a lesson: tag your photos when you show them online - you never know who will find them, and what it might do for someone's spirits.

A happy new year to you all, and here's hoping you're looking back on - and forward to - a year of enjoyable photography. I hope you'll share one more shot with us, this last week of the year.

  12. I haven't been able to post for a while, but have enjoyed checking in each week and seeing what my fellow photographers are seeing and posting.
This week my contribution is a whimsical photograph taken of my son and the mountain of gifts we moved to the den for unwrapping. I found the perspective amusing, and selected this shot (out of dozens that I took) because I like my son's expression...not only is he looking at the gifts, but he appears to be rubbing his hands in greedy anticipation. :)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

  19. Jana, lovely atmospheric shot!
This is one of about two dozen variants that I took for Christmas. I sent them via SMS to friends or posted them on their Facebook pages. The little angels are hand-made in Denmark. Not bad considering I did them in a rush on Christmas Eve.

  20. Early morning shot. I covered the wind mill along with the rising sun. I wish all my fellow Nikonians a HAPPY,PROSPEROUS AND CLICKFUL NEW YEAR 2011.

  21. Matt, this is a great story. I started photographing dogs as a more or less regular hobby after an old gentleman in the forest where I walk my dog told me that his old dog had died, but that he had posted on the refrigerator
a 4x6 of the dog I had shot and smiled each time he looked at it. It sure made more sense than a lot of things I'd done in my life. Here is one more dog.
    00XvkO-315375684.jpg

  22. Nice shot Matt. I've had two Weimaraners in the past. Here's my photo this week of another working dog, this one is a German Shorthaired Pointer working up a pheasant in the corn.
    Happy New Year everyone!

  27. Matt, that brought a tear to my eye - what a beautiful Christmas gift.
I haven't had much time to play with lighting as I had hoped, but tonight we decided to do a quick impromptu shot of us and the dogs, as my one older dog is slowing down and we don't have many pictures of the 4 of us together. Much to learn yet with the new strobes (and probably not the best choice of lens and settings!), but I'm happy nevertheless that I got one where the dogs are actually sitting still. 10 seconds on the timer (oh how a remote shutter would have been nice!) was cutting it close but trying to keep the attention of 2 dogs at 3o seconds was simply not in the cards tonight!
Happy Holidays to All and see everyone in the New Year!

  29. Best wishes to all for a Happy New Year! I went out early Monday morning while at my mother’s (in the Austin, TX. area for Christmas) to see what I could find in the freezing temperatures (29F). Taken with my new Christmas present to myself, Tamron 60mm macro@1/90, f/8, ISO 400. Photo is a stack of three images in PSE 8.

  30. I took this one with my newest old toy: the Reflex Nikkor 1000mm f/11
It is dark and has a difficult manual focus. The bokeh is weird and people often hate it.
But I´m loving it and the challenge to make it work.
This pic has very few and basic adjustments in PS CS4 (levels and sharpen).
    Happy 2011 for you all.

  31. Happy new year! Before sunrise on Xmas morning, lenticular clouds formed over the mountains, and the sun then began to light them from underneath; they changed sahpe, the sun changed angle, and we saw for nearly an hour the best Xmas lights I can remember! D700, 70-300VR.

  36. Hi there, I am sad to say, but I didn't even take my camera out this Christmas, was a bit under the weather. : ) Will be sharing with you my day at the Zoo last week again. First time I get to take a photo of the Lion, even though he was sleeping. Hope you all have a great New year, see you on the other side..

  37. In my case I'm going to post a pic I took last monday, right before the 2nd cancellation of my flight back home. Taken with a D60 and the Nikkor 10-24, it shows the misery of many "passengers" waiting outside Heathrow Terminal 3, with temeratures below freezing, and with Heathrow security not allowing us in. Checking the list of flights ultimately proved fruitless for me.
In case you wonder, I could eventually fly back home the very 24th, and arrived for the christmas eve dinner with my family at 21:00.

  42. This little guy and his sibling were in our front yard tree early Spring; motionless. After I used a step ladder to have a closer look he moved up the tree to another spot. At the base of the tree were remains of another. Then my wife and daughter mentioned finding an adult dead under the car after a very intense wind storm. So .... we assumed he's and orphan but since providing food, a regular addition to the family.
    00Xvnn-315447584.jpg

  43. I took this last evening. I've had the luxury this week of playing at home with a new D700 and the Nikon Close-Up speed light system that my employer purchased for the company. This shot used all that with my Nikkor 105 macro and my SB-800. It's been a lot of fun.

  44. A gloriously beautiful Christmas Day morning, and here we are climbing through 200ft over Larnaca's runway 22 in our little helicopter on our way to another Santa mission. Sorry for all those stuck at other airports and in freezing miserable conditions. No flying problem here, and still quite warm. There were a few big jets stuck here, but only because their destinations such as Heathrow and Paris were closed.

  46. here's a grab from early this month -- a yellow-bellied sapsucker. considering how fast a bird taking off moves, i'm surprised this one came in as sharp as it did at 1/1250s. in any case, it happens so fast that we can't even see it except in a photograph.

  47. It's nice having some time off during the holidays so I can stop in at the Calatrava addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum and just hang around and take some photos when I see something interesting.

My contribution was taken while skiing the other day. I tucked the D90/50mm under my ski jacket - I think I will get that 35mm lens; it should be a little more comfortable.

My best wishes to all of you community members, have a nice New Year`s Eve and of course, a happy New Year.
My contri this week it`s a bit distressed; please excuse this ugly oversharpening. I`m having another chapter of eyesight issues... I don`t want to skip this latest WeD PiC of 2010.
