Nikon Wednesday 2011: #31

Discussion in 'Nikon' started by uplandlife, Aug 2, 2011.

  1. Important: please keep your image under 700 pixels on the longest side for in-line viewing, and please keep the FILE SIZE UNDER 300kb. Note that this includes photos hosted off-site (at Flickr, Photobucket, your own site, etc).

Are you new to this thread? The general guidelines for these Wednesday threads are right here. Remember: only one image each week!
A good first Wednesday of August to you, Nikonia. And a special welcome to the several new contributors we've seen in the last few weeks. It's always great to see our weekly world tour reach into some new directions and different experiences.

Speaking of seeing the world ... no exotic excursion, here. Just a pleasant Sunday morning prowling around the Baltimore harbor area, with a stop in Fells Point for a great breakfast. This view catches a couple lingering in the shade between two harbor-side buildings, escaping just for a moment from a very hot sun. Yes, I was playing tourist. Where'd you take your Nikon gear last week? Share a photo!

  4. Hello Everybody,
thank you very much for the kind comments on my photo last week.
This week my photography club had a special theme, Pastels. I've asked my make up artist Rachel to pose for me, as she has the most beautiful auburn hair, that pairs up very well with pastels. I used a lot of marshmallows for this shoot and also asked Rachel to create an eye make up resembling the swirly pattern in the sweets. Here is the result.
Have a lovely week and I look forward to your submissions.

  6. I took this photo of a hummingbird moth while weeding in my garden. Yes, I have my camera and macro around my neck while I weed~ doesn't everyone? My husband thinks I am strange and hold no large expectations of actual weeding being done by me while out in the gardens, lol. Thanks for the kind words on my last weeks entry. Have a great Wednesday.

  7. Happy Wednesday, everybody!
I have another dog picture today -- I rarely have a chance to photograph anyone else, but dogs (especially my golden retriever T-Bone pictured here) never say "no."

  31. Some exciting stuff so far.
I found a dead pigeon on my lawn this morning; the victim of some nocturnal conflict with a cat or fox doubtless. I thought it was quite beautiful in a macabre way. It's not often you get to see the irridescent feathers and brightly coloured beak close up, so here it is in all its grisly glory.

  32. Looks like Nikon Wednesday #31, 2011 is a great start today. I have missed a couple of weeks being on vacation in Philadelphia area.
I shot this Sunrise on the banks of the Delaware River in Bristol, PA. It is actually my 1st real attempt at doing one. I haven't tried a Sunset yet but I am sure that I will as I am hooked after taking this one. Of course I have seen sunrises but never looked at the beauty through a view finder and tried to capture one. The colors this morning were just stunning as so vivid.
    I used my Nikon D90, Sigma 30mm @ f10(AP), 1/13s, iso 200 - on Tripod
Light editing using ACDSee Pro 4. I hope that you enjoy this as much as I.

  39. Hello fellow Nikonians. August is here and vacation time for some of us has just begun! Greece is most beautiful, sunny and colorful at the beaches this time of the year and I can't wait. Went for a swim and had the chance to shot a few shots. Nothing special, just people enjoying and relaxing by the sea. Take care!

  46. I like the shot with the handler and his dog, Roberta. I knew you wouldn't be able to stop with just one (liked the retriever in the water, too). It's great subject matter - trust me that you can spend years exploring it, visually. Next thing you know, you'll be buying a blaze orange hat and vest.

  48. Eastern Kingbird mobbing Osprey
This was a very interesting behaviour as there were three Kingbirds dive-bombing the Osprey at its nest. Until the Osprey got fed up and flew around trying to loose them, however, one was persistent and kept up the attack in mid-air. Aggressive little guys during mating season!

  51. Last weekend my family and I went camping at the Payson Lakes Campground about 12 miles outside of Payson, Utah. Payson Lakes is a collection of three small lakes and is a very popular family campgournd because it is so close to Provo and Salt Lake City.
This photo is of Box Lake about a half mile from the campground and not quite as crowded as Big East Lake which is only 100 yards from the campground area. I used three photos to get this picture using the PSE8 Photomerge Exposure feature. I was really pleased with how it turned out.
There was hardly any breeze at all which helped in getting a very still shot of the trees near the shore. But there was just enough water movement between the shots to give the reflections of the trees a nice soft blur.

  52. Due to travel, I am unable to show any images captured during the past week. So I'm sending a shot of a 2010 scene in Rhode Island (one that I may get a chance to return to on this current trip). It's of the Mount Hope Bridge over Narragansett Bay. At sunset, in case you're wondering. Beautiful though it was, I did not linger at this location -- the mosquitoes were thick and thirsty!

  55. Thank you so much , Matt. Coming from the master of hunting dogs, means a lot to me! You are right, I had to go back for more. For me to get up at 5:00am , long pants, rubber boots and 90+degrees ,plus humidity, you know I have fallen in love with this :)
I have already gotten the olive green rubber boots to slosh around in the mud and muck and hopefully protect me from any snakes! Blase orange is not far behind. I really need to develop some panning skills as I would love to capture the sense of motion and speed when they are running :)

  60. So many nice (Nikon)pictures! I'm almost afraid to post this one, my first one. But I thought it is quite interesting with the few bright spots in an otherwise fairly 'hazy' shot. I took this while driving around Barnegat Bay, NJ last week to find some good windsurfing spots. When crossing the bay, this view said to me: Shoot me! ;-) So, I did, through a rolled up window with my little P7000 - ISO 100 - 6 mm - 1/2000 @ f/2.8. Have a nice (wednes)day!

  85. Happy Wednesday everyone. My favorites this week are:
James W's Thunderbirds for the timing
Mike F's starfish for the colours and texture
Kent's grand daughter and Steve B's cat for their expressions
Paul H's Big Cypress for the simple but very effective composition
Ray RG's South Boston for the beautiful light
and Chris S's orange rose for sheer visual "punch"
I have spent all week doing family things and I've taken only snaps. So I thought I'd post another picture of my youngest daughter taken a couple of weeks ago in the cornfields near our home.....

Rick M.~ great clarity and color!

  92. Chris Wick,
Your portrait of your daughter masquerading as a landscape, or is it the other way 'round, just knocks my socks off.
I looked at your posted pics, and you are lucky to have a group of photogenic women for models, and a very sharp eye for landscape composition. They are a wonderful combination.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It always feels great when someone likes my pictures.
I tend to think of the one in this thread as a portrait in a nice place, rather than a landscape with a child in it; but its definitely the other way round with some of my work.
I'm very lucky that the girls are happy to pose for me. My own portable (if somewhat unpredictable) foreground interest. Whilst I can claim some credit for the composition, their good looks are all down to their mother!
    Chris
p.s. thanks also to Panayotis for giving my picture a mention!

  96. Hi guys,
Apologies, late to the party, on Holiday and only just decided to sign up to the Hotel's wireless as the public machines are crowded by kids most the time. Wishing I'd made the decision earlier, man alive, stellar jump in the submissions this week...really...REALLY! impressive.
