A good Nikon Wednesday to you all, and a slightly belated happy Independence Day if you're here in the US. I hope we'll see a few long-exposure fireworks shots this week, from Monday's celebration.

I didn't get out to capture the pyrotechnics myself this year. Instead, I'll share this formal portrayal of a thoughtful man's nod to the traditions of our colonial past, and his more revolution-minded horse's serious, sober engagement in the spirit of things. Used your Nikon gear to record some recent festivities? Share a photo!

00YzvY-376803684.jpg.549871cf72252253ab2f89432c6f322c.jpg

Happy Wednesday all, I took this last week as we passed a farm with 50 or more ancient tractors some from the 1940's, the people on the farm were a little suspicious of us at first but after a while and some banter they warmed up to us, to the point where i managed to get a portrait.

00Yzvj-376809584.jpg.0b328dc18a381158238fb931b384a65c.jpg

Thank you to those who commented on my picture last week of my dad's birthday gathering. My photo this week is of the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse which has stood tall and proud in its present form since 1858 on the easternmost point of the United States near Lubec Maine.

00Yzvl-376811584.jpg.6e0351cc049fef2159e88ece66804601.jpg

An unexpected opportunity has taken me to Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico. One day last week I rose at 5am, and drove the winding road into the mountains to San Javier. The San Javier Mission took 14 years to build, and was completed in 1758. I wandered around the Mission for about an hour, choosing a variety of compositions, and also using my 85/1.8 to photograph many wonderful details. Nikon D80 w/Tamron 17-50 f/2.8.

00YzwC-376823584.jpg.59bfbc7e1795589c2e5cb171c2904b00.jpg

Well it'll have to be another vacation shot this week. This time we're in Sweden, my native land. This is shot on the largest island off the Swedish coast called Gotland. Then main city in Gotland is Visby. Visby is a very old city/town. It goes back to the Viking era if not further back. There's the old Visby inside the wall, & the new Visby outside the wall. It's very snobby to live inside the wall. ;-) The wall dates back to around 1100 a.d. something & it was built in three stages. Many of the houses inside the wall are very old. My father's is about 800 years old & I'll show that another time.
This is shot with the D700, 24-70 f/2.8, polarizer at 32mm, f/8, 1/500 s. ISO 400 while we were out for a walk...
Anyhow, the Visby City Wall dating back to around 1100 a.d.
(copyright written with "Viking" for fun)

Since there are some threads on the 24-120mm/f4 AF-S VR, here is another sample. This is our tour group walking on a lava field on the Fernandina Island in the Galapagos.

I was walking at the end of the group and suddenly I saw the late afternoon sun creating an interesting light pattern on the lava rock. I had the camera ready and quickly zoom to the widest 24mm setting, using f8 to get some depth of field. The advantage for the 24-120 is its flexibility such that you can get off some quick shots.

Nikon D7000 with 24-120mm/f4 AF-S VR lens @ 24mm, f8, 1/30 sec, based ISO 100.

00YzwX-376833584.jpg.0baec718f2587efabf3038c4945265a0.jpg
