Nikon Europe RAW warning.

Just a FYI from Nikon Europe, apparently. Sorry if it has been covered but I didn't see it in the threads.

It seems if you have the earliest versions of ViewNX and Nikon Transfer on your computer and you are using newer cameras you should delete the software from your computer.

This is such an important warning from Nikon-Europe, that it can't be found anywhere on their website after 10 minutes searching.
It's my understanding that the only thing bad that can happen in the above circumstances is that the software simply won't open the incompatible NEF file.

This "press release" sounds to me like some stupid Chinese e-Whisper that's gone from one unauthorised website to another. "My friend says that her boyfriend has another friend who's cousin's dad swears that Canon makes all of the lenses for Nikon and that if you paint a Nikon lens white there's no difference" - And suchlike baloney.

You could both very well be right, how clever of you. I must be honest I thought the initial post I got was via Rob Galbraith, but I misread my RSS feed, it was from The Digital Picture via PetaPixel, sorry if it sounded alarmist.

Having said that the only reference I could find on Nikon Europe to V1.0/V2.0 was a warning to not try to open them both at the same time, maybe somebody did, lost some files, and the story started.

Unfortunately much worse than this can happen. e.g. Nikon Transfer doesn't just copy files from your card, it also modifies metadata. If this goes wrong, Bad Things may happen to your file. I don't know about the latest incident, but a similar issue with an old version of Transfer has certainly caused file corruption in the past:
