New Voigtlander 50mm f1.1

Recommended Posts

The DOF between an F1.1 and F1.2 lens of the same focal length is not to much different. Vignetting is not pronounced, certainly less than many other super-speed lenses.

This lens is within 1/3rd of a stop of the $10,000 50/0.95 Noctilux and has a price aimed at under $1500. That is pretty amazing. Of course, a used Noctilux was under $2,000 not long ago.

This lens will give a real choice to those wanting a super-speed lens and holding the cost down under $2000. Prices on Canon 50/1.2's and 50/0.95's will come back down to Earth, as will 50/1 Noctilux's.

Bokeh is subjective. It also has a lot of factors involved, such as distance to point of focus and distance to the background and structure in the background. A Summarit used close-up and wide open, with a busy background much farther away will be dominated by astigmatism. "Summarit Swirlies". Back the main subject off to 5ft, it settles down.

SO: I would wait for more pictures from the new lens before pronouncing judgement. But- if you like smooth Bokeh with a fast lens, the Canon 50/1.2 is a good candidate and is ~$300 or less, probably will hit $200. Especially now with this lens out

Canon 50/0.95 wide-open at 1/15th, probably 5ft or so to subject.

Same lens, wide-open with focus at closest distance and cluttered background.

Wide-open, and 1/1000th

<p>Who needs it? Or any other super speed lens. Give me f2.8 and useable 640 ISO any time. Really, I respect the other view, and like the sex appeal, but I hate the bulk and the virtually unnecessary wider aperature. And bokey--yes there is something there, but reduced to real photos, it is way down the list of image features. But if you love it, buy it or worship it. I love Leica but I suppose there are other fish in the sea. </p>

<p>I have a small photo and specs of the lens, but I was told that it "isn't public info yet". So I'm not going to be posting it. I'm sure that someone else will leak or release the info before I'm told that it's okay to do so. Them's the hazards of trying to stay in the good graces of camera companies.</p>

<p>I will check again though.</p>

<p>Kelly, from what I can judge from the photos in Asahi Camera, the Super Nokton knocks the lard out of the Nikkor 50/1.1. This is, of course, a less than scientific observation. Nevertheless, I am sure comparative bench tests will prove the Nokton 50/11 does have the edge.</p>

<p>Lens pricing is interesting.<br>

A Nikkor 50mm F1.1 was 125 dollars used in 1969; it goes for 4 grand today.<br>

A 50mm F2 Sonnar was 9 dollars in 1969<br>

My used Noct cost be 400 in 1979. My new Nikkormat FTn with 1.4 cost me 305 bucks in 1973<br>

My canon 50mm F1.2 LTM was about 55 bucks back 12 years ago via ebay<br>

My 5cm F2 LTM nikkor was 9 bucks on ebay a few years back; I was the only bidder in a 10 day auction; it was listed as an enlarging lens.</p>

<p>I am expecting that the introduction of this lens will bring down the price of the Canon 50/0.9. It will probably put a dent in used and new Nocilux sales.</p>

</blockquote>

<p>While I don't have any preditions on the pricing of the Canon 50/0.95 or the Noctiluxes, I would like to point out that an f/0.95 lens is still different than an f/1.1.<br>

Those who own those and who would buy the new Cosina 50/1.1 would certainly report comparisons in due course. :)</p>

<p>You're right, Vivek. I am going to get the 50/1.1 and may get the Canon .095 to use on my Canon 7. The fact is that the f1.1s, f1, and .095s are within a hair's breath of each other. The old Noctiluxes are very expensive and the new Noctilux .095 is super expensive (10 grand). The Super Nokton would be an economical compromise. The Canon .095 has been the economical alternative to the Noctilux. It's been grossly underrated optically in my view but the fact remains it is old and not as good as its younger brothers. Furthermore, and this is very important, it can only be mounted on the Canon 7 and 7s, unless you send it out for surgery, which here in Japan costs 30,000 yen. For anyone wanting a super fast lens that is new and not overwhelmingly expensive, the Super Nokton is it. </p>

<p>The analogously fast Nikkor 50/1.1 in Leica thread mount is rare and extremely expensive. The one's in Nikon S mount are comparable to Noktiluxes in price. And these are antique lenses.</p>

<p>I think price will be a very important factor in this matter not because of parsimony but because the super fast 50s have not be stellar all around performers. Just about any modern 50/1.4 lens blows them away. We shall see just how good this comparatively inexpensive and not quite so fast super fast 50 will fare. </p>

<p>Thanks Alex! No worries!</p>

<p>That is an atractive price. The ZM 50mm 1.5 is $969 at B&H. The 50 1.1 will be maybe $100-$200 more.</p>

<p>My guess is CV will sell a bunch of these.</p>

<p>So when will they do a 0.95?</p>

<p>BTW, I had to look up '<em>parsimony</em>' :-)</p>

I doubt they will do a 0.95. The Nikkor 5cm F1.1 is about half the weight of my Canon 50/0.95. And for pricing- my 50/0.95 with the Canon 7 ran $400 about 5 years ago. Leica Noctilux drove the prices up, I suspect Cosina will drive them back to Earth. And my Canon 50/1.2 ran me $90. But I made it out of two parts lenses.
