Sandy Vongries
Though they were all at the opposite end of the pond on private land, I took a few shots. Shovellers, Wigeons, Mallards, a Wood Duck, Mergansers, etc. And then the one on the upper right. Second shot, on the water. With the long neck, it looks like some variety of goose, but doesn't match anything in the books or half a dozen web sites. This as usual, in Central Montana today. Any ideas? Sandy Vongries
You guys are likely correct - the flying shots on bird sites are closer, but that is a looong neck in my photos. I suppose variations within the species. Thanks!
HoofArted
You may be wrong but you may be right Sandy (apologies to Billy Joel). I won't argue against a variation but my first thought was he had his head stretched out looking for danger when you happened to see him.
Tony Parsons
Another vote for Pintail (familiar with species in Norfolk in winter). Long neck characteristic of the male - as was said, probably looking for danger, or else courtship display (bigger is always better !).
peterdexter
Aren't those two in the left Bufflhead? And lower image Wood Duck in flight?
