picturebug
I finally got my press pass and went to my first game Saturday. I zoomed and cropped in PS elements. All the images are a little soft, maybe I need to adjust the sharpness in my camera. South Carolina Gamecocks 6- Clemson Tigers 3. Oh well better luck next time.

miles_feigenbaum___dallas_
not surprised he struck out, his eyes are closed! i have hundreds of these shots , usually with the little kids in little league with their eyes closed. once they learn to keep their eyes on the ball, they start hitting some. maybe he was dreaming of hitting one over the fence... great shot! andy_depaulo
Looks overcropped. Is that a full res crop from the master?
ralph_wilson
Hi Harriet,

May I offer a critique? A couple things I have picked up from others. I think a shallower depth of field would help by throwing the fans out of focus and concentrate the viewer to the batter.

I think the softness came from over-cropping..

Also watch your timing and try to get the ball in the photo.

All these things take practice and I'm not trying to discourage you. Keep it up. It took me a long time to accomplish those things and I still rely on a fast camera and a lot of luck.

Best

Ralph
picturebug
Thanks guys. My lens is not quite long enough on my digital, so I zoomed and cropped. No resizing. My film cam has a longer lens but it'll be a few days before I get those. I was so intimidated by the other photogs there. They had the high dollar lenses that could see a flea on a dog's butt. But I had a good time. I'm going again next Saturday. I've got a lot to learn.

picturebug
Oh yeah, I was shooting at f8, 1/2000. To get a better dof, should I make the aperture larger or smaller? I had my ISO set at 800.
ralph_wilson
Try ASA 400, f4 or f4.5 and let the shutter speed take care of itself. (Assuming you have good light again.) I have a section with sports samples at www.rwphoto.com. All shot around f4. If you start to loose your light, bump it up to ASA800 and go with f2.8 if you can. Watch that your shutter speed doesn't drop below 1/500th. The ball will be blurred even at 1/500th.

Glad you're having fun. Keep up the good work!
mark_goody
> maybe I need to adjust the sharpness in my camera I've found better results turning the in-camera sharpen all the way *down*, and then applying USM in Elements.
picturebug
Thank you, I'll remember this next weekend. You can look at all my baseball shots on yahoo if you want to..http://photos.yahoo.com/hrf62 and let me know what you think. Some are a little too soon and some are a little too late...but I'll keep practicing. Thanks again.
tom_keenan
Then again, sometimes you can figure out where the ball went!
