ray_moth
In the context of Scandinavian mythology, a TROLL is a hideously deformed, malicious being with a powerful body but a weak mind. Trolls lurk beneath bridges, in order to ambush and devour unlucky travellers. In the context of the Internet, a TROLL is a . . . majid
The original trolls were a kind of dimwitted but extremely strong stone giants in scandinavian mythology. They inspired the evil trolls in J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit".

nesrani
"I've really no idea, except some think that the going for the most responses, or new posters, which we should encourage, seem to qualify as is the tendency of the good doctor here." Huh? A troll is generally someone who has strong opinions that other people don't agree with, or someone who enjoys provoking argument. The two interlock to a large extent. Incidentally, is "troll" a US spelling for "trawl", to fish by dragging nets along the bottom? I haven't seen that before.
terry_rory
Ray Moth you mentioned that Trolls hang around bridges? (Just like in the story "Billy Goat Gruff".) Do you find them in "Troll booths"? Hahahahaaa (I crack myself up!)

seth_honeyman
Xinbad Trolling is a low impact form of fishing consisting of dropping a baited hook over the side of the boat, seting the outboard to just over idle and slowly passing over and tantalizing the poor fish below. patricks

"Troll" is an important part of the Nordic/Scandinavian mythology. Trolls lived in the deep dark forrest along with other creatures like elves, little house santas (tomtar), "Näcken" (a naked man playing sitting on a rock in the furious river playing his violin so beautifully that little children couldn't resist been lured into the water) etc.
Above painting is by John Bauer, a famous Swedish artist that illustrated one of the first children books on the subject called "Bland tomtar och troll", which was released in 1907. jay_.
That reminds me of a chem prof I had in school. He was from somewhere in Gen. Lee's camp, and about an hour into a lecture where he kept referring to "electron clods", one of us yankees (guess who?)asked: "I've heard of dirt clods but never electron clods, what are they?" to which he responded "No, not clods, *clods*, you know, like big white fluffy clods in the sky!" Allen Herbert
Troll is a word used by some folk who dislike any other thoughts other than their own. Usually they are self-lovers, with big egos that need constant attention. Really they are little frogs puffing their chests out, because, in reality, they are just little frogs trying to be important. I think they are worried something might eat them.
