...Just another question on DNG

Recommended Posts

...Just another question: can I extract a .xmp file from a developed DNG file? And can I re-convert a DNG file to the original raw (e.g. CR2) file? Are sidecar .xmp file generated by all raw converters?
Thank you, Alberto.

I think its probably possible to pull out the XMP, off hand not sure what utility may do this.

You cannot reconvert the DNG to the proprietary raw UNLESS you embedded that raw into the DNG in the first place (then you can extract it). I dont think this is a good idea because now your DNG is huge and every time you update it (XMP or embedded JPEG), backing up takes that much longer. Better to save off the original raw to another drive, then convert to DNG. This can be done in Lightroom as you import. All raw converters should save out some kind of XMP either in the DNG or for proprietary raws in a sidecar file.
