liljuddakalilknyttphotogra
Mark - many cameras will do well for conversions. The D50, the D70 or D70s as well. I was told by people not to convert my D200 so I sold it. I so regret that. Since then I've heard that Thom Hogan has converted his D200 to IR & loves it & deems it a "keeper".
I love my D70 converted by Jim Chen in San Diego. He's a Nikon shooter & does a fabulous job. He's less money than LifePixel & he's a lot faster. The day my D300 is converted to IR (which one day it will be) it's going to Jim Chen. He did an amazing job on my D70 so I have been recommending him to several people since. I will continue to use him.
Here's Jim's site for you to check out....
http://www.jimchenphoto.com/
You will find a lot of information on Jim's site. He's working on adding a lot of information.
Lil - writing from the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas...... ;-)
Robert DeCandido PhD
D200 - hands down - because of the CCD sensor AND the tri-color (RGB) histogram - you need to see all the channels to make sure you are not blowing one out...D70/s don't offer that possibility. If you go with LifePixel, get the deep IR conversion - but Jim Chen sounds fine and less expensive (personally I would go with Jim Chen).

Anyway, from a D50 converted by LifePixel:

http://www.photo.net/photo/4872267

And from a D200, also converted by Lifepixel:

http://www.photo.net/photo/8336098
michael_bradtke
Wow Lil
Who gave you the misinformation about the D200. I was using a IR modified D100 for a long time. Then I bought one of the $600 D200 from Bestbuy and had it converted. Got it back and tested it out and then sold the D100. It is very nice.
I wonder how much of a difference in image quality there might be between the D200 with a CCD and the D300 with its CMOS chip.
mfophotos
I just put a Wratten 87 filter over my Coolpix 8700 and it does wonderful IR. No mods needed.
eric_boutilier_brown1
I had lifepixel convert a D80, and after I adjusted the AF (for a 50mm f/1.4 at 4' for portraits) it was perfect...the RGB histogram is a must, and the image quality was very good at 200 ISO...noise built up quicky after that. A bit more about the camera is on my website here - http://evolvingbeauty.com/index.php/evolving/techPost/infrared_digital_d80/
liljuddakalilknyttphotogra
Michael - it came from several different sources. So what is done is what is done. Yes I guess I could look around for a used D200 so I can use ISO 100. But the D70 does well. Only problem is the super tiny lcd screen on the back. I can barely see anything on it. So I do actually need a different camera in the long run.
CvhKaar
I know you are looking for Nikon, and its a bit of blasphemy for some people, but still you may want to have a look at the Sigma SD14 camera, since you can convert it for ifr AND BACK in a jiffy .....
Link : http://www.popphoto.com/Features/Camera-Hack-Capture-Invisible-Light-with-Your-Sigma-SD14

soulgazephotography
A nikon D40 is what I currently use and it's great WITHOUT converting. I rarely even use a tripod and the images still come out clear. I just use my Nikon D40 and a hoya RM72 filter. My exposures are around 8-15s depending on the time of day and amount of sun at ISO 400 and f5. Several examples in my infrared folder on www.soulgazephotography.com hopefully they will illustrate that you dont always have to spend the money to convert a camera. Oh and D50 and D70 are two that I've heard are good at picking up infrared too. All of my images are from a Nikon D40, Canon S5IS or Canon A70. Older cameras work best. If you are 100% wanting to convert, there's a guy on flicker that has some of the best IR images i've ever seen from a converted camera. He uses a D300. They're expensive though....but if I had money to blow i'd do that! Good luck! Contact me if you have questions :)
Edit: I attached an example photo link. I have better ones and worse ones, this is just one of my favorites. Let it load and zoom out so you can see the whole pic :) hope you like.
