Holiday snapshots, thank you photo.net.

After reading all these posts (which I greatly enjoy) I have learned

many things about photography and equipment. Over the past year I

have been good have given in regularly to N.A.S. and faithfully

upgraded from the el-cheapo N65 I started out with the G series zoom

with on camera flash to an F100 with a battery pack, sb 800 flash

and the 28-70 F2.8 ed if afs lens. (Photo.net has taught me all that

is needed for quality photography is cutting edge technology.) I was

carefully packing my equipment into the camera bag (this too

required 4 upgrades until I arrived at the Domke F2 canvas of

course) when I realized I had no film for capturing the kiddies

opening their holiday gifts. Not a problem, I quickly entered

the "Film and Processing" forum and read and re-read posts regarding

the best print film and processing advise (for my intended purpose

of course). After learning all there is to know about film I called

B&H (after rechecking their seller ratings) and ordered a a brick of

Reala and some extra double A batteries and a corresponding number

of mailers from A&I. (I must confess I failed to read any posts

regarding double A battery selection, I'm sure I should be using

different brand batteries for both the camera and the flash) Abraham

Goldbergstein (name is fictitous) correctly, accurately and politely

took my order and guranteed prompt delivery, I gave him my credit

card number and started dreaming of those delicious holiday images

(I no longer call them pictures or photos). Herein lies the problem,

my credit card is over the limit and Abraham (again fictitous name)

therefor cannot send me any film, batteries or mailers, had I kept

the N65 and G zoom I would have plenty of cash for film. It looks as

though I will be reduced to Holiday snapshots on my (eh) digital

(yuck) point and shoot Kodak LS443 (cough), and for this I want to

thank all of you on Photo.net , its all your fault. Goodbye for now

and happy holidays to all, I'm relocating to Debtrelief.com.

First of all, great rant. You've probably hit a chord for a great number of frustrated photographers who have chosen the same path.

"had I kept the N65 and G zoom I would have plenty of cash for film."

This a great point, Hugh and really sums it up for a lot of users. While I agree that having the best gear it great, the gear should not be so great as to put someone in the spot that you are in.

As far as what you got from Photo.net, I'll say this. For as many post there are about getting an F100 and AF-S lenses, there are as many post advising us to shoot with what we have. Of course that is easier said than done. I say dump what you really don't need and start from scratch. Makes images with your eyes and your heart--not your wallet. I wish you well.

Hi Rick, I agree with everything you said, you hit the nail on the head. I was just having a bit of holiday fun. I really enjoy this forum and all the posts and truly have learned alot. Nothing is more true then great images are made by people not equipment. There are lots of great posts that have nothing to do with equipment. The best equipment probably a good photography book, or film to make more images, best of all......ENJOY THE EQUIPMENT YOU HAVE !!!

On the other side of the coin I had a Leica M5 w/3 lens and sold it all off(it was hard) and bought a N80 and took the balance of the monies and bought a Carribean cruise for my wife and I. It's almost a feeling of liberation. I didn't have to go the 12 steps route by I initially felt sick after the Leica left but one gets over it. To tell the truth I just love the N80 it's allot of fun. If I could do it all over again I wouldn't change a thing.
