nancy_fraser1
Hi, I'm wondering if there are any George Hoxie fans out there. I googled his name and this site came up. His daughter Meredith Flerlage commented in one of the forums. I recently aquired 2 titled and signed nude photos by him. One had been exhibited by P.E.Camera Club, At Port Elizabeth, 1947. Also written on back; "Gevaluxe, Leica Elmar 90mm Lens". The title of the photo is, "With Velvet Ribbon". It is of a beautiful nude woman, her head turned away. She has a black velvet ribbon tying back her hair. The other photo is of the same subject only a smaller version. both are mounted on board. Any information would be apprieciated. Thanks.--Nancy

aplumpton
Nancy, a good review of his life and achievements (including that of former Minicam magazine editor - the forerunner of the now defunct but well known Modern Photography magazine), university teacher, photographer and portfolio reviewer (up until his death in 1984), may be found here:

http://www.luminous-lint.com/app/photographer/George_Richmond__Hoxie/A/

He was apparently a quite inventive and curious photographer and his work is in many collections.
nancy_fraser1
Dear Arthur, Thank you so much for the info. I have a hunch that the estate sale where I puchased this photo, belonged to the woman who posed for the portrait. I could be wrong. She passed in July of this year and was 87 years old. She lived and worked in Dayton around the time that Hoxie was there. Such and interesting mystery. Thanks again.--Nancy
aplumpton
Nancy, you are lucky to have that link via your purchase. Art and photography can carry many stories of prior human involvement, not unlike our own, and a knowledge of them can in some ways enrichen our own lives. Enjoy your picture from this apparently very gifted photographer.
