The notion of "focus one third into the scene" is very wide spread. Is it the right way to do ?
Only in very special case, when the furthest point is twice the distance of close point, focus one third in to scene works.
<P>What is the simplest rule ? <P> Use Merklinger's method, focus at mid point of scene.
