mike_halliwell
Looks like a very useful firmware update. See press releases and make press enquiries Also includes better Subject Tracking AF and support for some more CFExpress cards. Hope it works on owls....:D Edited February 18, 2020 by mike_halliwell
ilkka_nissila
They also now support Lexar and Prograde Digital CFexpress cards. No support of Sandisk CFexpress yet, it seems; there are multiple user reports of problems with those. I am happy to see this development via continued firmware updates to the Z6/Z7. mike_halliwell
I just updated my Z6 Early reports seem to indicate markedly better AF behaviour. Please let us know! Starts making me wonder when the Z6 is going to drop below £1k......? Getting kinda tempting......:D
conrad_hoffman
I wouldn't have thought animal detection was a big deal, but a friend recently got a new puppy and it would have been great to have. I didn't do the last upgrade and usually wait for reports from the field before diving in. I'm an early adopter for some things, but tend to hold off on firmware for a week or three.

Just depends on what your battle is....;) I remember the fuss over having a 'newbie' feature known as face detect AF priority in the pro D810! jon_porter
So can DX be toggled off and on now as well?
mike_halliwell
So can DX be toggled off and on now as well? I'd guess, emphasis GUESS, that you could designate an Fn button to do that? Hopefully someone who has a Z camera can chip in here!
conrad_hoffman
Tomorrow one of the guys will have his dog at work, so we'll see how animal recognition works. Too soon to report on anything else.
conrad_hoffman
Well, that was an epic fail. Focusing works fine and face & eye works fine on people, but set to animal it couldn't lock on this guys eyes at all. Any ideas?
mike_halliwell
You mean NOT like the videos? Humm....sadly no idea. Did the little yellow square ever 'see' his eyes ?
conrad_hoffman
No yellow square ever. I switched back over to people mode and it worked perfectly with his owner. No idea how the AI works, but maybe it's his color or contrast or something. It's not like you can't see those great eyes! OTOH, it could still be user error of some sort. conrad_hoffman
Ha! Here's something funny- if I point the camera at the image of the dog on the computer screen, the yellow square appears and finds the eye!
Andrew Garrard
Hmm. What were the lighting conditions of the actual scene? Maybe it was too dark or lights were flickering? Or Nikon trained the algorithm on pictures of puppies rather than actual puppies...
conrad_hoffman
Overhead flour-scents in the office. I'll have to try it with the flicker detection on.
Mary Doo
Interesting. Need to update mine and check out my dog's eyes.
ilkka_nissila
Brad Hill notes in his blog that the Z7 animal eye AF works well for white-tailed deer.
mike_halliwell
Ha! Here's something funny- if I point the camera at the image of the dog on the computer screen, the yellow square appears and finds the eye! Have you been watching the Twilight Zone again? It time for that spooky "Do, do, do do....." Owls, I want OWLS! There's a Hawk and Owl Conservancy very near me, so head-on owl faces are challenging. Their arena is pretty shady/bright/contrasty/flat from minute to minute! Or Nikon trained the algorithm on pictures of puppies rather than actual puppies... Now, that's just inspired thinking, by you and/or maybe NIKON!! Anyone tried a cat? I need help with my 2 who are either on speed (AKA CatNip) or Valium.....:) Hummmm, Nikon calls it Animal, I wonder who can find the most bizarre eye-track 'success'? Chameleon maybe? EDIT>Conrad is that Flour, the whitish stuff, or Flower as in Floral? Scented Flour, I wonder if there's a market for that..... Just teasing.....:) Edited February 20, 2020 by mike_halliwell
