fred_c1
Which speedlites from the EX-series have non-TTL auto mode? Would like to use it with my older cameras in addition to digital. Thanks!

PuppyDigs
All Ex Speedlites have E-TTL and TTL modes. Only the top models__430EX, 550EX, 580EX-- have full manual (set 1/8 power, 1/4 power, etc.). I think only the newest model--580EX LL--has four flash modes: E-TTL, TTL, manual and auto flash (old fashion external sensor like a 70s unit). Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
mark u
Using the autoflash mode with older cameras than the 1D mk III requires tweaking the settings on the flash for ISO and aperture, as noted in this extract of the manual: http://webpages.charter.net/hammerli/580EXII_AUTO.pdf
david_lau3
I just bought a 580EX II and did some quick tests of the auto mode. It is suprisingly accurate and in some situation even more accurate than E-TTL II, including off centre subject. I was using 24-105 on 5D for testing. jim_simon3
If your question is whether the EX flash can take pictures other than using through the lens metering, yet automatically, then I'm of no help and see Bob's answer and Puppy Face's on the 580EXII. If you are asking if the EX series will work with Canon EOS film cameras that are not E-TTL, then it is Puppy Face's answer. Yes, all EX flash units with work with all EOS film bodies. I am under the impression from the Flash Bible (http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/#faq4) that the EOS film bodies that are not e-ttl will communicate to the EX flash that they are simple (TTL) and the flash will work properly. picturesque
David--it is true that unless you have the new 1DMkIII, you have to set the f stop and ISO on the 580EX II when in auto thyristor mode?
