albert knapp md
we have been through tis war with the R8 but I had hoped that the R9 would have been modified. I feel sad for you and hope that the slides shot were not critical ones. BTW, it usually takes about 100-150 rolls for the scratching to appear. How many rolls did you use? john_boyle3
Once upon a time Leitz Wetzlar made an excellent SLR. It was called the Leicaflex SL. Look for a good used one, you will not be disappointed nor will your film be scratched. There are also plenty of excellent 3-cam lenses available. SolaresLarrave
Sorry to hear that, John. It seems Leica gear just declared war on you (I remember your postings about the M7). Can you get some money back from them? Or the seller?
ben z
I've had a hankering for a Leica SLR for a while. I don't like the chunky size of the R8 and R9 and I have a problem with the SL and SL2 unfortunately though in that my eyes are so bad I need a corrective eyepiece plus my glasses and with the corrective eyepieces on the SL or SL2 I can't then see the whole screen. So if I were to get a Leica SLR I guess I'd get an R5 or an R7 probably the R5 because the R7 is too expensive. Also I'd want a good range of lenses and I priced out a 28, 50, 90 and 180 and even in bargain condition (and I wouldn't be happy with scratches on the glass, just worn barrels are ok)it would run me almost $2000 which is much more than I can spend (I don't want to sell any of my M stuff to raise the cash). I have the opportunity to buy a 28-70/3.5-4.5 (first type) and 70-210/4 together for just under $1000. So for around $1500 total I could get those lenses and a nice R5. I know those lenses are Sigma and Minolta. So would it be totally stupid of me to get this setup?

When out traveling, I left my Summicron R 50/2, Macro Elmarit 60/2.8 and Summicron 90/2 home, only bring the VE 28-70 because its range is ideal for travelling. You may get a 35-70/3.5 cheaper, but IMO, 35mm is just not wide enough.
This VE 28-70 was made by Sigma for Leica, with Leica specification.
German magazine Color foto and Foto Magazin both rated this lens. Color foto rated it higher than Tri Elmar M, foto Magazin rated it "foto Magazine Super 9.6 five star *****" (in comparision, Nikkor AF 28-70 /3.5-4.5 was rated four star 9.0 )
If you think you don't need 28mm, The newer Leica 35-70/4 has better performance ( more expensive too )
gary_pinkerton1
John, sorry about the '9'....just curious as how many shots were messed up and on how many rolls? This is the first '9' I've heard about doing this, any chance development could have had a hand in it?
Karim Ghantous
Ben wrote: "So would it be totally stupid of me to get this setup?" I don't see much point. You'd have more flexibility with a Nikon F/2/3 setup. And you could actually afford the primes which are very good. Ultimately, will having a compromised Leica kit make you happier than a fully-featured Nikon kit? IMHO the Nikon system would make you happier in the end but only you can decide that.
