james_gallagher2
I have recently purchased a D700 and have a question that does not seem to be addressed in the owner's manual. Whenever I use the pop up flash or a speedlight, the electronic analog exposure display shows bars indicating underexposure (to the far right). Can anyone tell me if this is normal or is there a setting in the flash menu I need to address. The shots I take with flash seem to be properly exposed. Thanks for the help.
frank_skomial
Meter only meters what light can see and reports on that. It cannot predict the future light of the flash, as that is produced and controlled by CLS/iTTL system after you press the shutter button.

If your photos are coming out adequately exposed that is because the flash + ambient light exposure is sufficient to make an adequately exposed photo -something that can be determined only after the fact but Nikon's iTTL system does an excellent job of predicting where that optimum exposure point will be.
