susanm
Has anyone caught this? It's on VH1 Sunday nights at 10pm. (I couldn't find a previous thread on it, apologies if I missed it.) The show is the same sort of format as America's Next Top Model (same producer, too). I'm not sure how much experience the photographers have---I know one is a wedding photographer, and another does live band photography. Their goals are to become fashion photographers, and that's what the competition's about. Winner receives $100,000 and a layout in Marie Claire magazine. I have no interest in doing fashion photography, myself, but love to watch the show. (I also love to watch America's Next Top Model to see the fashion shoots. Well, that and the drama queens.) What I find interesting about this show is that the photographers don't really seem to get that it's all about pleasing the judges. They seem to just want to do what they think is cool. Which is not how you win a competition. I've told my kids lots of times, getting good grades is not necessarily about how much you learn (unfortunately). It's about figuring out what your teachers want, and giving it to them. Same with these types of reality TV shows. Is this a hair product shoot? Then the judges want to see gorgeous hair. Is this a gown shot? Then the judges want to see the gown! Ah well, it's fun.
jgalyon
Being the photography sponge that I am... I'm sure I'll be watching this Sunday. If it were my choice I doubt that my "goal" (for this show) would be that the winner would become a fashion photographer. But come to think of it...the whole concept is a bit odd, period. In another thread today, someone brought up the idea of a "poetry race". A photo contest seems to be an ugly second cousin. But...as i said, I'm sure I'll be there! michael_notar1
its a mildly entertaining show. its too fast pasted. getting an assignment for 1-2 shots and figuring how to prop it, light it, shoot it, PS and print it is alot to do in a week. i guess shows have to explore every topic out there. just another example of people looking for the new 'extreme' thing, peopling loosing it, getting in fights etc. and when you get out in the real world, 99% of us have to please the client when we know its not what we want. gordonjb
It was only a matter of time. Reality TV is going to leave no stone unturned in a relentless search for ratings. The part of all this that continues to astound me is that there actually is an audience for this stuff. I guess it's true that people get what they deserve. gary_watson
What's next? Bestest quad bypass performed by a GP, radiologist, dentist, and med school reject? No, it's no fun. This format has spread like duckweed across the planet's TV programming. The best "shot" contest I've ever seen was run by Toronto's CITY-TV. One roll of 120 film, one hour, one model. The object was a nude and the contest was called "Naked in the House." Contestants were newlywed to nearly-dead pros. The format selected for thinking, risk-taking, and luck. The use of film effectively removed the safety net and slowed things up. Great contest that produced stunning, surprisingly results.
