It's interesting that I visited the same locations three years ago, yet

my images of

<a href = "http://terragalleria.com/asia/china/lijiang/">Lijiang</a>

<a href = "http://terragalleria.com/asia/china/dali/">Dali</a>, and

<a href = "http://terragalleria.com/asia/china/kunming/">

Kunming</a> (<a href = "http://terragalleria.com/asia/china/shilin/">Shilin</a>)

could hardly be

more different.

QT,

There's some great shots from China on your site. I know other people's photography is always based on a mixture of their own tastes, personality and preferred style but capturing that in close connection with the people and their environment is the best part of photography in China. And having captured these aspects so well is what makes your work strong. Enjoyed viewing...

Andy,

One piece of advice if you havent come to the same conclusion yet...

Tour groups and serious photography dont go together at all. All I ever do in China before visiting somewhere is the research first; message boards like virtualtourist.com are often good for answering questions; I try and book the hotels myself, and in China ctrip.com.cn is a valuable resource; once at the place I try and get my own guide/driver as needed and ensure its one on one attention.

I can speak enough Mandarin to get myself into any trouble but negotiating out of it has proved more difficult. But even with limited language skills avoiding tour groups isnt too difficult.

regards

Thanks for the advice Craig. I didn't place that much expectation on great photos this trip because it was a family trip. So I was juggling between being with family and taking pictures :p

In retrospect I'm quite happy with the shots, given the compromise.
