sknowles
The NPS is conducting public meetings and gathering public comments on the proposal to deal with Carbon River road and trail from the NP entrance to the Ipsut Creek campground, see Press Release and information. The NPS is seeking public comments through July 31, 2008 to review the options and prepare a final proposal in the fall of this year to seek approval and funds (after another rounds of public meetings).

While this may not effect many photographers, since few visit the northwest quadrant of the NP, and then mostly Mowich Lake area, the likely option will be to close the 5 miles of road from the entrance to the Ipsut Creek campground, meaning an additional 5+ miles (one way) to get to the campground and the areas beyond, such as the Wonderland trail and Carbon Glacier. There are a lot of photo opportunities in the Carbon River valley which will be restricted to hike/bike in only.

Not saying photographers are lazy, but it will limit your equipment to that which can be carried into the area and backcountry. Just thought you'd like to know to offer your opinion. It's your National Park and tax dollars.
akajohndoe
Thanks, Scott. While I do view the NW corner of Mt. Rainier as the local's private area, I also know that it is amazing. I will follow your links and read them and act appropriately.
