yog_sothoth
Does anyone have experience with the collapsible 50mm Summicron and the Canon 7? I have read conflicting information on the web as to if the lens can collapse safely or if the lens will hit the light baffles when collapsed.
mukul_dube
The safe thing is to do what Leica advised when they came out with the M5: stick tape on the barrel so that it does not collapse enough to cause damage.
Gus Lazzari
The floor of the chamber has a tight tolerance that usually causes a drag of the collapsing lens "claw".

Put the camera shutter speed on bulb, release and hold it open. After mounting the lens on, collapsible it slowly while viewing through the full frame film gate opening. You'll see if your camera has a floor baffle that's bulging up enough to cause a drag on the intruding tube.
steve_bellayr
It is advisable not to put a collapsible lens on a Canon P; probably the same for the Canon 7.
jim_jones3
My Summicron from about 1954 can be collapsed while mounted on a Canon 7S. There is barely enough clearance. The lens barrel does contact the upper baffle if the lens is mounted or removed while collapsed
yog_sothoth
Thank you for the information. I had read that a summicron barely fits while a summitar or summar does not. I will report back later with the results.
john_shriver
I have no trouble with an early "radioactive" Summicron on my 7s. There is a guide that ensures that no lock tab of the tube is pointing "up" while you collapse or extend the lens. That's the only thing that could scrape.
The Summitar is built the same way.
Problem lenses are Elmar and Summar.
yog_sothoth
The Summicron fits well on the Canon 7 and has no issues. I will make sure to mount it and remove it with the barrel extended.

The Canon 7 is quite a chunk of a camera. It is a big switch from a iiif.
