laura_myers1
I am writing a paper on one of Blythe Bohnen's self-portraits. I am having trouble getting information on the internet about her and was wondering if anyone had any good links. Also I am trying to prove why this photo is important to the history of photography. I believe it is important because of her intentional and conceptual use of a motion blur created by the camera. I am looking for any information on the history of self-portraits and the history of motion blur in portrait photography. I am also looking for information on the history of camera mechanics in relation to necessary exposure time. Any other information would be greatly appreciated also. Thanks!

don_essedi
I couldn't find a bio, or any recent mention of her. I thought the A.I.R site would have something, but no. Her photos, esp the self-portrait, are online. One of those sites may have some info, but none of the ones I looked at did.

Laura, if there is not much info online, perhaps making contact with an institution, say a gallery or museum, that has recent work of hers would be a good place to start.

keith selmes
A straight google search on the name produces plenty of hits, but they mainly repeat the same small amounts of information and pictures.

Trying something like blythe bohnen influence or blythe bohnen motion blur begins to bring up useful leads, like this
http://www.nytimes.com/1984/03/30/arts/at-whitney-5-new-york-painters.html?&pagewanted=2

There's a short bio here
http://www.ashevilleart.org/index.php?/component/option,com_joomgallery/Itemid,184/func,detail/id,438/

And how to do motion blur portraits here on .net
http://www.photo.net/portraits-and-fashion-photography-forum/00NaLb

I think there's a lot of info on this topic, but you really have to dig for it.
Probably a good topic to work on.
jtk
IMO it sells her short to consider her only as a photographer. Her involvement with A.I.R. was more substantial ( again, http://www.wadsworthatheneum.org/pdfs/Matrix%2013.pdf ...talks about her understanding of movement )
