marco_vera1
I am new to the digital world. I would like to know what the most effective way of scanning my B&W prints is, while still maintaing full tonal range and meeting the size requirements of this web site. dpi? pixels? etc.... ThanksMarco

jim schwaiger
Marco, There are 2 basic philosophies about scanning for the web. 1) Scan at the highest resolution of your scanner, fix the flaws, downsample, then sharpen. 2) Scan at the required resolution to get the desired pixel dimensions. I prefer the first, but there are downsides to both methods. For B&W you may want to scan it as color and adjust it in PhotoShop (or whatever program you are using). Adjusting the Levels -or- Curves properly can make a huge difference. Photo.net wants the images below 800x800 pixels and file sizes under 100kb. This requires a decent amount of JPEG compression for a detailed image. You have to strike a balance between image size and compression level to get the best looking images uploaded.
