Beginner Photography Courses or Workshops in FL??

Recommended Posts

Hey, photo.net! My name is Annette and I am an aspiring wedding photographer whose knowledge of photography has come from online discussions and forums, as well as a few beginner books. I've searched online for photography courses in FL and can't seem to find any other than those at universities or technical schools. I'm looking for a few quick beginner courses that could get me started, not necessarily a degree. Does anyone know of any workshops or courses in Florida?? (preferably the Miami area, but I am open to commute! Any suggestions would really be appreciated! Thanks.

Hi there! I'm actually in the same boat as you are. I've just recently taken up photography and I had a tough time finding courses at first. However, I attended a workshop at the South Florida Art Center and the instructor there directed me to the Digital Photo Academy. (http://www.digitalphotoacademy.com/Home/Workshop_Locations/params/location/47/default.asp ) I'm planning on attending the intermediate class there in September (I just missed the August one. :( ).
Also, I'm considering joining this group (http://www.meetup.com/shootmiami/). I need to overcome my fear of being a complete newbie in front of more skilled photographers before I get up the courage to attend any of the meets.
Overall, it's kind of tough to find classes here, but you might want to consider online learning as well. I hope this helped!

Awesome info! Thanks alot! I'm working on making my first DSLR camera purchase within the next few weeks--just a matter of deciding on a camera (it's between the Rebel XTi, XSi, T1i, or the 20D, if u have any suggestions or comments). Those classes at the Digital Photo Academy sound exactly like what I am looking for. I checked out the website, and I am very much looking forward to attending probably some time in October. The photography group sounds really cool, too, although you are right: it is pretty intimidating being a newbie in a crowd of professionals, but we all gotta start somewhere! I was definitely considering the online courses, but I was hoping for a more hands-on class. I think the Digital Photo Academy would be just right. I can't wait to get started!! Thanks a lot for your help!

Annette, Get a 50d, Its great and if you end up not liking photography that much then you can resell it and prob make a profit. If you love it then you have a top of the line dslr that can handle any situation you come across, and you will have all the newest usefull functions and a HD screen all at your fingertips and you will not be so behind when you decide to upgrade. Which you will as soon as you see what everyone else is shooting with. Good Luck, have fun.
