timreaves
Can anyone recommend a good background support system to buy for under $150. Also, has anyone ever purchased one off ebay. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.
tobiasfeltus
Hi Tim, what is your setup? I had considered getting one off ebay, but then realized that there was little point for the size of my studio, as the stands occupy a lot of deapth, so I installed a telescopic steel curtain rod which works perfectly, albeit not portable. and it cost me under 10ukp. But, the thing is that it does the job, and supports a 2.4m wide backdrop no problem. t+
beno_t_marchal
I can recommend two Manfrotto/Bogen products: their background support system but it may be outside of your budget and the autopole. If the room is small enough, you can install one autopole going from wall to wall and attach your background.
--ben
timreaves
Hello T. Feltus, I setup is in a basement room that's 10x20 feet. Not a whole lot of space. I have a 150ws strobe and I plan to pick up another 300ws strobe soon.
timreaves
Hello Benoit, I all ears to your suggestions. Please tell me more. I really have no experience with background systems at all!
friskybongo
I use the Savage Port-A-Stand. Here a link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=395974&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
timreaves
Louis, do you find this unit to be sturdy and a good value for the price?
john_murphy1
Here's a link to a thread on this topic.
In reference to the sturdiness of these things, most of the name-brand portable systems are reasonably sturdy with the exception of the Bogen portable system which is very flimsy, and I regret buying it. This is surprising to me, since most of the other Bogen products are the best in their class. The Autopoles are very sturdy (when properly secured), but expensive, since you need to purchase a lot more than just the poles themselves.
For your needs, the Photek system should be fine.
As far as using ebay, I only would use it for buying used qear if you're in the US, since you can usually get new stuff for about the same price from B&H without the potential hassles of buying from an unknown seller. john_murphy1
Sorry, the link to the Bogen background support was incorrect. jmf
http://cgi.ebay.com/9-1-2-Cross-Bar-for-Background-Support-New_W0QQitemZ7608560389QQcategoryZ30082QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/TWO-Heavy-Duty-12-ft-Light-Stands-New_W0QQitemZ7608473008QQcategoryZ30080QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem He's pretty good, but not a quick ship. I suspect he imports these himself, and if the shipment is a little late, so is your order. The stands are steel and a little heavy. The crossbar is heavy enough to hold fabric, but I'm not sure about a heavy head and box.

friskybongo
Tim, To answer your question to my previous reply, I find the Savage Port-A-Stand to be very sturdy. I should point out that I use the 53" width roll (smaller & lighter) as opposed to the 107" product so I won't comment on stability for the larger sized roll. I think it's a great value for the money - included is a free roll of 53" paper and a carry case.
