q.g._de_bakker
I couldn't continue the previous post, because the inserted text (copy and paste work from the tinyMCE HTML-editor, via an external editor to change the brackets) apparently appeared in a section that was 'styled' as line height 0 by tiny MCE (which results in a thin line of barely visible fragments of many superimposed letters), and no way to see where the cursor would be).

I also tried the cursor thing: the arrow-up key did not take me to a line higher, but moved the insertion point to (a random?) point further up in the text.

It happens on different computers, but it so obviously is something MCE does, that that would not matter.
I do use IE8, yes.

Maybe you could find out why MCE would think it fit to insert not-displayed zero height span-tags? I mean, what purpose could they serve at all?
bobatkins
Test test test test and now edit [and issert this] with the cursor keys and now type some text and backspace over it xx and type some more text. and now try posting it...

and all is well. As far as I can see and as far as I have heard via complaints, nobody else is seeing this behavior.

Does it happen in all browsers. If you haven't tried Firefox or Opera, give them a shot.

No amount of editing, backspacing, up, down, left or right cursor key pushing gives me any problems.

You might try posting this issue on the TinyMCE forum to see if anyone else is seeing it anywhere else. q.g._de_bakker
I'm getting good at this.

Sometimes the delete key doesn't 'take' in MCE, and i need to use the backspace instead.

In what browser are you testing, Bob?
And if it would turn out it only happens in one (version of one) browser, would you not like users of that browser (not exactly an exotic one) to have a problem free Photo.net experience?

It's worth noting too, Bob, that i only see this strange behaviour in Photo.net's MCE. Nowhere else on the net.

I don't think it's up to me to find out how and why Photo.net's editor messes up, by the way.

Here's another strange behaviour right now: the insertion point was at the end of the line, i used the mouse to click the down-arrow on the scroll bar next to the edit window, and with that click the insertion point jumped to the beginning of the line.

Now let's open up the HTML-view and see what's cooking today... nope. No added extras now.

P.S.
What if i edit it after posting...? Still good.
I'll report the next time i notice the thing playing up again.

bobatkins
Nope, no problems at all. Lots of editing using cursor keys, deletes, backspaces and mouse clicks. HTML looks perfect.

If anyone could duplicate your problem, maybe we could troubleshoot it, but if nobody else (especially Jin, who I assume would be the troubleshooter) can make the problem happen, it's really, really, difficult to "fix" it.

q.g._de_bakker
Bob,

You both missed the fact that a) i have tried it on a different computer with the same result (fifth post in this thread), and b) that it's MCE that's playing up, not my computer.

Seriously, your "you show there is a problem, but i can't reproduce it, so there is no problem" attitude is quite a bit less than helpfull.

And the fact that you have been writing HTML for a couple of decades and yet do not recognize that MCE turns out pretty imperfect HTML, i'll let speak for itself.

So now stop trying to find blame with the messenger, deal with the message.

P.S.
I'll edit this post post-posting again, and let's see what happens.
Nothing this time.
bobatkins
Just how do you suggest someone fixes a problem they don't have? How do you know you've fixed it? We didn't write the MCE code, it's an open source project. Analyzing their code would take a lot of time, so since we only have one user complaining you can appreciate it having a less then urgent status on the priority list.

Does anyone else have a similar problem? Please speak up if you do. I use this site as much as anyone, with IE8, Firefox and Chrome and I have NEVER seem ANY problem similar to the one you are describing.

If it doesn't happen all the time, only happens to one (non-subscriber) user, and you can't provide a keystroke sequence that will always make it happen, a "fix" may be very slow in coming.

Speak up people. Anyone else see this? Anyone at all?

If you really need it fixed, do some research. See if someone else has similar problems elsewhere. See if the TinyMCE forum can help. This is a community site. The users help maintain it. It's free (if you don't subscribe) and you get far more here than you pay for. Your report has been noted. I'm sure if and when the limited programming resources we have get some time, they'll take a look at it. If you can tell us what the source of the problem is, then I'm sure it will be addressed much sooner. We'll eventually get to it, but don't expect it to be a high priority item when only one user out of tens of thousands is reporting an issue and nobody else seems to be seeing it or is able to duplicate it.
q.g._de_bakker
Bob,

Still in denial, i see.
Unless i would type those extra silly spans myself (and if you are suggesting that, i know somethign else tht's silly too), the problem is very much yours, i.e. Photo.net's.

Why is it so difficult for you to accept that it is MCE that does strange things? Why, it even leaves its name in the crap it produces!
And why is it so hard to understand that it is not me who is running MCE as part of Photo.net?

And why is it so hard to accept that, since it is Photo.net's MCE that is doing this, Photo.net should be the one researching the causes?

I thought i helped you by pointing out what your Forum-software is doing. But really...
If you think i will do the work finding out - without having access to the code you are running on your servers (and even with) - where your software messes up... What are you thinking...?

As i said before, "your "you show there is a problem, but i can't reproduce it, so there is no problem" attitude is quite a bit less than helpfull."
Why it's even past the beginning of being insulting.

Yes, i understand that it's not a high priority thing if (!) it's only one user who ever runs into this problem.
But that doesn't even begin to justify your attitude.

joshroot
I think that's enough.

The issue has been noted. If anyone else has the same problem, drop me a line at the "contact photo.net" link at the bottom of the page.

Q.G., I suggest that you just turn off TinyMCE as I instructed earlier. As it is highly unlikely that I will have the time or resources to chase down this issue anytime soon given that you are the only one thus far who has reported it. There are too many other needs on the site that are important to hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of users. In a perfect world, we would fix every little thing we came across. But this world ain't perfect.
