40mm Summicron C v 40mm Rokkor for Leica CL

Recommended Posts

Is there any difference between the 40mm Minolta Rokkor and the 40mm

Summicron C, other than the name on the front of the lens?

For that matter, is there any difference between the different

versions of the CL (one has a the "Leica" name real prominent, while

the other says something to the effect of "Minolta-licensed by Leica"?

If there are no mechanical or optical differences, is there a

difference in price?

re the lenses:

http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=004Gza - more in the

archives, i'm sure

possibly most significant is the series 5.5 filter thread on the summicron vs the 40.5mm

(less a hassle) on the rokkor

re the bodies:

the leica and minolta cl's are the same. then there is the minolta cle.

re pricing:

leica vs. minolta - as you might expect

There are 2 Minolta 40mm Rokkor's. One for the Leitz Minolta CL and the other for the CLE. The original CL Rokkor is identical in every respect to the Summicron-C apart from the 40.5mm filter thread. The CLE 40mm Rokkor is slightly different cosmetically, and is similar in optical formula to the first 40mm Rokkor but has more contrast being a more modern lens. It is also has a conventional M cam. On price if you asked that question 2 years ago I would have said yes but now everyone seems to acknowldge that they are similar lenses and as such fetch similar prices.

Since the CLE 40mm Rokkor has higher contrast than the two CL versions I dont think a generalized statement that the Sonnar 40 has more contrast than all the early 40mm lenses can be made. So to only a side by side comparison with the Rollei 40 and the others will we know for sure a current sharpness comparison. I have compared the same lens in a Rollei 35 and at 2.8 the Summicron/Rokkors have much better edge performance, being one stop down so they should have the advantage there. Unless the formula has changed to give better edge performance in the Rollei RF version (which I dont believe it has) then all we can expect is a increase in contrast from the compact Rollei 35 version. Now that prices have come down I will try get a RF 40 for myself and add it to my collection of 40mm lenses and 40mm fixed lens rangefinders. It was simply too expensive before this.

For what it's worth, my comment is on the physical attributes o fth elenses. I have bot the M-Rokkor for the CLE and the 40mm Summicron-C and the M-Rokkor is significantly lighter (but still feels every bit as well-built) than the Summicron. The Summicron seems the slightest bit more compact than this later Rokkor lens as well (maybe a couple mm shorter).
