Nocti-Monkey

Oh Steve, Your humor is just TOO much! I would be embarassed to show that joke on photo.net. Maybe this forum should be called the ASSINE-CRITIQUES forum.

How about saying something useful about the photo instead of acting like a baby with spinach in his mouth.

Looking at this image and the others you have posted I realy don't like the out of focus areas at all - they do exactly the oposite of what out of focus areas are supposed to do - they attract your eye. I think there is a danger with this lens of becoming obsessed with this effect rather than thinking about the basic elements that make a photograph work. If it's smooth out of focus areas you are after - any of the summicrons have it in spades for a fraction of the cost -if it's ultimate speed you need - show us some pictures which are impossible with any other lens.

Powerful! The bokeh reinforces the disturbing aspect of this crucifixion scene. On second thought the purplish face of this monkey suggests it absorbed enough alcohol to be oblivious, an explanation which goes equally well with the bokeh :-)

well, Paul, I still cringe when I recall posting a fall landscape marsch shot taken with my Leica IIIf and 50mm Elmar f3.5 lens. I thought it was great and the first comment posted congratulated me on posting a shot with 100 % bokeh. Aside from that, I suggest you keep shooting that lens and keep shooting the monkey. I dont know much about the Nocti... lens but I thought much of its appeal was the low light if not damn near dark in which it could be employed.

My only equivalent lens and it really isnt by a long shot is the CV Nokton f1.5 50mm. For some reason I am not shooting it much.

As for this particular shot, if had been me I might have got around to the left to face him or around to the right to shoot him from behind and got all the clothesline items in focus, but that is just my 2 cents worth.

caption suggestion? "Which one is not like the others?"

"This is what happens to those who take the last beer."

regards

Bill

Frankly I would be embarrassed to show this picture publicly.

All that money for a Noctilux and this is the result. This forum

should be called the Leica LITE list.

Actually, this

picture isn't a million miles away from being a half decent stock

shot - suitably generic with a nice quirky touch. Similar stuff sells

quite well at the moment.

Paul,

I like your Noctilux images. it is quite obvious you understand what you are looking for with its narrow depth-of-field, and using it well. on this forum, you need to have included your Nocti-Monkey image as as no-words 'hanging the Noctilux monkey' and you would have seen a hundred similar photos posted. most likely, none as appealing as your f1.0 contribution. Brad Evans would post his latest zoo photo of the red-hatted monkey companion of the organ-grinder, Marc Williams would post a wedding photo of some groom monkeying around, and another eight-dozen out-of-focus photos that weren't related in any way to your title and support Douglas Kinnear's comments.

post more!

I am somewhat perplexed. Many of the Nocti shots shown on

different threads recently seem to have nothing quite in focus, or

the OOF areas are much harsher than I have experienced from

the 3 Nocti's I've owned over the years (including a current one).

The lack of focus can be chalked up to new users not grasping

how critical the focus really is...even slghtly swaying back and

forth will lose focus completely. But the harsh Bokeh is wierd.

Could it be a function of really harsh highlights and movement? I

rarely get the double circles like some of the shots show. Most of

the backgrounds I get at f/1.0 are smooth, and look like a soft

charcoal drawing in B&W. Hmmmm....

Grant, if it weren't for the fact that you post copious numbers of pics, I'd swear you were Jay's alter-ego. How about you start your own thread with advice on cultivating this good 'eye' you're always talking about rather than just offering high-school-style taunts of other people's work? I'd listen to anything positive you have to say. Really, I would.
