._.9
Does anyone know Digital Net Shop ? Or have you had any experience with them as a buyer ? They advertise the Nikon D100 for $1450... see at this address (copy paste it as is) http://www.digitalnetshop.com/viewitem.php?IndexID=1995&RefTag=google This sounds too good to be true. I would call but I know if they confirm this as the true price I will be tempted to charge right away without questioning their reputation. Thank you for any lead. ellis_vener_photography
You had better find out if that is a Nikon USA imported camera or a gray market camera brought in by an unauthorized importer. That is goingto make a hugely expensive difference if your camera ever needs servicing.
Nikon USA (which is seperate from the Nikon mothership) has made it a policy to only support andrepair products they import.
I know that policy raises people's hackles but pretend you are a businessman who has bought a franchise to sell, service and support a certain brand of widgets. would you be willing to service and support (for free) the same widgets that some body buysfroma distributor in a different part of the world and brings into your turf without paying the same import duties you are? I really, really doubt it. I am not paid by or supported by Nikon USA nor do i sel ltheir equipment. but I have always gotten the generally excellent support I have paid for by buying Nikon USA imported products, so I see their point.
I also know that they pay a high price in bad mouthing from people who don't like that policy. Jerry_
I was stationed in Japan from 1987 to early 1993. Nikon products sold there had a "world-wide" warranty. The U.S.A. is part of the world. Strange that Nikon USA (a subsidary of Nikon, Inc., in Japan) does not wish to 'repair' what needs fixing. (As a businessman, I would be the first to request 'funds' to fix anything gray market, and explain why. Or the customer could ship the item back to Japan for 'free' repair under the warranty.) If Nikon USA were to handle the 'repair' of warranty items in this manner, the gray market would dry up. The 'air freight' cost to Japan is rather stiff and would likely offset any 'savings' from the tight-budgeted USA purchaser. ----- . As the $1450 price seems to be a 'super' deal, Tudor, you should go ahead and find out what happens. Then post how well the transaction goes [or did not go....]
ellis_vener_photography
gerald,
My understanding is that if you can prove you bought your camera overseas (i.e you have receipt) Nikon USA will honor your warranty. What they don't logically want to do is have to service and support goods sold in USA that are not paying their way for that suport and service.
Gray markets will always be here because some dealer somewhere will always be will willing to sell a part of their inventory at a near wholesale price toanother dealer elsewhere just to keep inventory moving through their store. It also makes a difference as to how strong or weak the dollar is to another US economy.
hudsonphotos
How much is the shipping or handling charge? We thought Dell was giving us a good price on a computer and then they hit us with a $100 handling charge!
ShunCheung
When a price is too good to be ture, typically it is. Good luck.

dave_bernard
Sure, I ordered a Sony digicam from those folks a couple weeks ago. Their website took my order fine. The next day they phoned me. Asked me if I wanted a battery, or any memory. Did I want a manual or cap or software. They explained that this is gray market, and the manufacturer does not sell it with this stuff included in other countries. Sure. Their total came to more than, say, Ritz Camera wanted for a US Warranty model. I told them to cancel the order then and there.

._.9
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO REPLIED. The store is obviously a scam and Sorin was right they atract you with a good price and then once in the net the nightmare begins. On the phone they were pretty rude and they refused to reply my e-mails thankfully I have listened to all of you and I refused to give my credit card number when I ordered telling them that I will send a fax with the number. I was close to be in trouble but folks from photo.net helped me to see beyond a good price. I guess I will keep dreaming about Nikon D100 until it drops to 1600 or so. andrew_schank
I remember a time long ago where there was a thing called "false advertising" that a retailer could get in trouble for doing. I have found with camera equipment, the lowest advertised price is always a good indicator of who NEVER to do business with.
