Cannot rate a pic. How come?

Can't really be sure without looking at it but here's a guess. When you go through the rating queue pages and you skip over a photo it seems to leave a null in the ratings values of the table but creates a record so that the system knows that you have passed over that photo before so that it doesn't show it next time you go through.

If you go in and try to rate the photo, you'll usually get a screen saying you previously rated the photo /10 and /10 do you want to change it to whatever. After you confirm your new rating one of two things is probably happening. Your new rating gets inserted and the old null rating is still in the table or the new rating is inserted but there is still some sort of flag left indicating you skipped it and your rating shouldn't count. My guess is that there are 2 records but the null one doesn't show up. Except that when it tries to calculate the ratings it pulls up the null one and not the numerical one.

That's a guess on how to fix it. How to get it fixed is another matter. I remember sending a couple of messages regarding the bug to the old regime and commenting on it in the forums before. Don't know if anyone cares to do anything about this.

Based on your last response. Maybe someone's making some changes/tests related to ratings normalization that is causing you to have this problem even though you didn't skip over the photos.

From http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=003opA -

"On Saturday, starting at 8:00 AM EST, we will be normalizing the photo ratings, as the first step in implementing the plan that we previously announced.

We will not be turning off the ability to make new ratings during this period -- because this is essentially not possible to do without bringing down the site. However, any ratings made from 8:00 AM EST Saturday until the normalization computations are completed and the new scale implemented will essentially be lost. The compuations will take several hours."

Maybe that's still going on.

I posted ratings earlier today that didn't take. The system is a

little buggy. It has slowed so down so much in the last 5 months

that I can come once every few days and the numbers look the

same. Before they switched from the old top-rated page

changes were immediate. My ratings earlier today just might

show up next week. I have no idea why everything is sooo slow.

Yeah, the situation has deteriorated considerably...the system isn't responding satisfactorily enough. It is slow, images cannot be downloaded,-ok, a known problem but still a problem-, counters aren't counting or they aren't being updated fast enough and last but not least my ratings are not shown up at the moment I submitted them. I don't really know if they appear later, I haven't checked so far...I hope that things will get better soon because it's a pity for such a great site as this...

For the past few days my ratings awarded didn't show under the

image : even if the critique queue system showed above my

comment (the a/o header) I'd given, say 6/5.

Now they're showing up under the image - but the number of

ratings given in "My Workplace" seems stuck - it's been on 923

since normalisation, and I've rated at least 20 pics since then.

My 2p.

  • 2 weeks later...
Ratings I awarded in compliance of new policies (well, I was using only the high end of the scale) are also screwed up following the pattern Ashley described. Interestingly, the photo I awarded a 3/2 got many inflated rating and, well ... I thought the owner manipulates the html script ... that ain't that easy but possible...what's going on?
