Alerts for new posts in threads

I'm lazy. Now with that out of the way... I would like to know if any

new posts have been made to a thread since the last time I visited. I

do not like having to open the thread, then scroll to the bottom to

see if anyone has added anything since the last time I visited. As

someone who knows nothing about programming I'm not sure if what I'm

asking is feasible.

Does anyone else think this would be a useful feature? Is it doable

from the programmers POV?

Dan, you can set up email alerts for new threads in the forum, or new posts made to specific threads that you are interested in. Visit any of the forums and click the Email Alerts link at the top. There is also a New Answers link, which shows you new answers in the forum since your "last visit". The system is a little brain-damaged sometimes in figuring out your last visit, but it works more or less.

I'm with Michelle. There are already a couple (this one and the Camera Equipment forum, at least) which show a date in the view. I'm not 100% sure but I'm guessing that was the date when the question was asked, which is useful for historical digging but not so useful in the main view since questions are shown in reverse chronological order anyway. Replacing that with the date and time of last response, and adding that feature to the other groups, would make a lot of sense to me.

The email notification is good, but ... I read photo.net from both home and work, and so setting up email notification on a thread means that much of the time, the email will be going to the wrong place.

Hmm ... another thought. How about using a cookie to track the last time I fetched a forum view, and putting some kind of flag next to each thread that's had activity since then? Certainly not a perfect solution but maybe it might help, or might lead to another suggestion on how to do something like this.
