glen_h
(snip) When I got my turntable last year, equipped with a $450 Cartridge partly paid for with the COVID-19 Stimulus money, I noticed that the sound coming from Vinyl records was not as sharp as my CD's, but the DEPTH was amazing ! The violins were in the back, the piano was to the left side, the lead singer was in the front, the guitars were front and slightly to the right and no listener's fatigue ! Even my best CD's sounded FLAT in comparison, although their sound was a little sharper. (snip) . Mastering of CDs and vinyl normally requires a lot of equalization. The main limit on vinyl is the excursion of the cutting stylus for high amplitude bass. Too much, and it runs into its neighbor, resulting in a useless recording. In any case, it is very difficult to make a fair comparison between different recording media, given all the differences in mastering. -- glen

Given all the manipulation that can be so easily done in DAW software, it's easy to see some re-mixing engineer going heavy-handed on the FFT noise reduction when presented with a reel of 2" tape from several decades previously, complete with heavy hiss and print-through pre-echo. But having said that, the digital restoration of, say, Scott Joplin playing his own Rags is amazing.
