Grand Central

Shot this on slide film but forgot to take into account the ISO when shooting :( Played with it a bit, and got a reasonably nice picture, I think. Curious as to others thoughts. Taken during the pandemic, June 2020. Original file at bottom. Thanks in advance.

Grand Central is really a quite beautiful Beaux Arts landmark in New York. I think the lighting hides much of it and favors the more modern buildings above it. Of course, showing Grand Central in context is certainly an important way to portray it, but a different time of day might have afforded the viewer a more "fair" view of it relative to its surroundings. The black and white looks a little too artificially lightened in the shadowed areas. The color version, which feels a bit more natural to me, obscures much of the beauty of the building. The "glory of commerce" sculpture atop the main archways features nicely although the shadow which bisects it exactly in half intrudes a bit too much.

Nice shot. I wanted to see what it looks at with the side buildings (black portions dear the top) removed and the lines of all the building plumb - straight up and down. Do you have vertical and horizontal and aspect change sliders in your program? I also used a little shadow reduction and added some contrast and sharpening.

Like the color shot better. Grayscale just looks too flat, too dull, or some combination of the two. I do think that cropping off the top down to about the 6th or 7th row of windows above the sculpture would make for a better composition. I don't know what software you use but if it supports layers. putting the terminal (and the roadway) on a separate one and nudging the brightness up a bit, not much mind you, just a hair or two, might also help.....Izzy
